Need help......In my water heater I was putting the drain plug back in after the winter. It is one of the plastic type and I guess I overtightened. The head of the plug came off and the thread is still screwed in. I can not grab enough of it with needle nose pliers to turn it to remove it. Any ideas? Thanks

Oh, man! WIsh I had some advise on how to get it out. However, reading your dilema just made me REALLY glad about the $6 I spent at Camping World last week for a brass quick drain water heater drain plug. Good luck. PCM

I would very carefully use a hacksaw blade and cut through the plastic in 2 opposite spots then try to pull them out with pliers. heating them up with a hair dryer might make them more flexable as well.

How about drilling a proper size hole and inserting an Ezeout screw extractor? Apply counterclockwise pressure carefully and steadily, using a wrench or T-handled pin vise.

If you cant find any other way then there's a plumbing tool (really just a big easy-out) that's designed to remove what you describe. Its designed for iron pipe thread but will work for plastic too.
unfortunately it wont be cheap though.

It's plastic. You can easily drill it out. Start with a small drill bit and get bigger and bigger until (a) it falls out, or (b) you can get a screwdriver or pliers on it and screw it out.

When I snapped my plug head off the thread left was hollow. I took a file with a tapered end a bit smaller than the hole and gently tapped the end beating the file into the plastic (not very much). Then took a pliers and twisted the file which unscrewed the plug.
