I am in a park which the park managers, a husband and wife team, have to work 6 days a week and be available on Sunday for people that drive in or reservations, is this average? They say they have had approximately 8 days off together in three years.

That's very possible. Motel managers that live at the motel face the same issue!

One of the most common complaints from folks running small parks (=no employees) is that they have no time off. Many quit for that very reason; others start closing their campgrounds during less full seasons just so that they can escape. It's a bit of a bitter lesson for those that think they're getting into an easy life.
Oh, and the same applies to other small lodging businesses (B&B, small motels, etc.).

As a former motel owner, then general manager of other motels for others (which is similar to park management), I lived on premise in all cases. But, with good staff I took time off - unfortunately, many managers aren't good at delegating or allowing others to do the jobs necessary to allow them to take time off. And some owners won't let them.
I wouldn't hesitate to work managing in a cg - but not with an owner that won't allow things to be done where I would have time off. With the great workampers I work with now - I'd be thrilled to be in the cg business over the motel business!
That said, many managers and owners never get a day off - and some don't want it - they like the control it gives them. With a seasonal business, I can see it - as they know they'll have their time during the off season. But when your season is year round, you have to learn to do things differently.

when we had our first camp ground to run by ourselves......we initially took a day off.....but coming back we felt funny not knowing what was going on in our CG, and would spend hours catching up....and then we decided to alternate our days off.....we rarely left the CG, but just took turns kicking back and relaxing....after all we were living where others only get to come visit..........
now as managers we don't have a day off, but we go to nearest large towns shopping together, have dinner or lunch and shop in other stores than just the ones we need to for the company.....and after we get all the CG's open and running, we will sleep in once in a while, go to dinner, go exploring........so even though we don't spend a night away.......we do get to be away from the work and relax.....
and we have an awsome crew (20 plus hosts) this year who will handle everything with us here or away.........
great summer coming

We have about the same situation as wepampercampers. We have a good crew and take time to go to town to shop, do some sightseeing, etc. No set days off and we usually do something every day. But we don't resent it. We know that we will have time off later in the year.
As we owned our own businesses prior to retiring, we know how the situation is and deal with it. That is what makes it successful.

I agree with both Dianne and wepamper - I was speaking of full-time, year round - when I said that time off is a necessity. For a season, it's a matter of hours, etc - and I don't see a problem. When I managed yearround, I never took my time off during the busiest times. Even if the employees could handle it, it was MY responsibility. I never minded that. But in both cases, you need to learn how to manage your time. And I'd say Dianne is probably an expert at it - with the time she spends here, too!
