I plan on driving north on I-35, then east on I-80, when I hit Des Moines, Friday, at about 7:30AM. My trip planner says to take I-235 over to I-80. It looks to me like it would be just as easy and the same distance to keep going a bit further north on I-35 until it meets with I-80. Is one route better for morning traffic then the other?
Is there much traffic at that time of the morning in Des Moines?
I will be leaving Terrible's Casino in Osceola,IA and heading to New Buffalo,MI. I will be trying to get past Chicago before 2:00PM to avoid the afternoon rush hour traffic.

Des Moines has a bona fide rush hour, just like other big cities, so expect some slow traffic at 7:30 AM. Haven't been through there in a while, so can't advise on the route. Hope someone from IA kicks in here!

Just came across 80 Mon of last week and there wassn't any constuction on 80 in Chicago area. Came through there about 11 on Sun night at no less than 65 mph. Late Sun night is a very good time to go throught there. I never had a traffic problem at that time

You will have rush hour traffic either way. Chicago by 2 P.M., good luck. From Iowa City east, I would watch the speed.

Take the bypass that goes south of town 5/65 easiest, quickest.

Ovaleye has a good recommendation. Bypass on south and east side of DSM will connect you with I-80 near Altoona, IA

Thanks for the recommendation for 5/65. I have a 3 year old DeLorme Street Atlas. It didn't show 5 connecting to I-35, at exit 68, as a 4 lane. My new Walmart road atlas does show it. They must have finished the I-5 construction within the last couple of years.

What did you mean by good luck getting past Chicago by 2:00PM? It looks like a 7 hour trip at 65 miles an hour. Will the traffic bog down quite a bit?
