To top off battery you use distilled water, and only fill it enough to cover the plates. If you fill so high the tubes bottoms are wet that's not OK.

Its generally agreed that you never add acid to a wet battery. Just distilled water.

The sulfuric acid is non-volatile, and only water is lost. Only add water. Fill it up to about one eighth inch below the bottoms of the inlet tubes, although I don't really think you hurt anything if the water comes up to touch the tubes. You are more likely to splash acid out if you overfill.

Never, never, ever add acid to water. Never. It will cause an explosive reaction. Distilled Water to acid always. If the battery is so
weak as to not hold a charge it's beyond anything short of replacement. Plate sulfication is probably the most commom problem caused by charging constantly without much discharge. Causes the plates to short together which becomes a constant drain on the battery internally. Time is the second battery killer.
Good luck.

I found out that the fastest way to add distilled water to my batteries was to use a turkey baster.

Acid is only added when acid is lost, by tipping the battery over, for example.

I'm free of prostate cancer for 5 years now.
All men over age 50 should get an annual PSA blood test. Mine had a low reading, but the yearly jump was significant. The biopsy showed cancer just entering the aggressive stage. Dr. Hackenslash removed it.
