I read a study that said only half of americans are happy. It seems like 100% of Rvers are happy. Is that worth a grand or two a year? Hmm lets see, Memories + seeing the country + freedom from Hotel/flight garbage + a few hundred to a few thousand dollars extra a year = 100% happy. Ill take them odds anyday. You?

Complaining about gas prices is like complaining about the weather.

Here's a similar comparison:
A top fuel dragster gets about 10 gallons per mile.
A freight train transports one ton of freight 400 miles with one gallon.
So what?

My DH's approach to the cost of the RV is if I'm in it at a campground without a toad I'm not out at the mall spending money -- figures he comes out way ahead to matter what the price of fuel

Our car weighs just over 3,000 lbs, the coach 32,000 lbs. So the car should get 10 times the mileage of the coach if we are going by weight - and of course that isn't the case. So looking at lbs moved down the road, the coach is cheaper than the car, especially since the coach is also pulling the car along!

My favorite was that the Queen Mary went 21 1/2 feet to a gallon of oil.

First, I am not trying to state that using my RV versus other modes of vacation travel is a cost saving motive. I know in the long run, owning my RV will come with higher overall costs than other vacation options.
HOWEVER, using the wonderful MH Trip Calculator that Ken Wildman developed and posted here last month, my upcoming trip to Cape Cod from NW Arkansas compares like this......
Using $4 dollar a gallon gas prices (this takes into consideration fuel, lodging, transportation and meal costs) This is for a 13 day trip.
RV $2686.57
CAR $2754.52
FLIGHT $3445.00
With the RV and toad, no rental cars, airline tickets, lower food costs, lower lodging costs, higher fuel costs, and my own bed.
For whatever it is worth......

I don't get it. Why does everyone whine about the expense of a motorhome/rv. It is a luxury to enjoy it is with anything in life there is a cost of ownership. If you don't like it sell it and do something else. No one likes the fuel prices but there are other things to talk about on this forum. Take shorter trips and a tank of fuel could last all summer and then it becomes much less expensive and funner then a hotel. When you are unable to control something then maybe you would be better off to focus on the things you can control. Fuel is going to stay high maybe even get higher and there is nothing anyone of us can do about. I personally like having my own bedroom with me and not having to unload when I get there.

My motor home gets 7 mpg (pulling my car).
That may not be real good mpg for a car but it's pretty good for a house.

Well, a typical cruise ship gets about 25 FEET to the gallon of whatever fuel it burns. Not sure what this post is supposed to accomplish....maybe that is why I hear taps playing in the background.
