Both are fine engines, the repair/maint costs are compareable.

About the only difference I see in an RV app is that the Cat offering when both are available is usually a 'half step' smaller than the Cummins. Like a C7 VS ISC 8.3), C9 vs ISL 10, C10 vs ISM 10.9, etc.

Interesting ......... OK just for fun-- the alternate. The Cummins is usually a 'half step' smaller than the Caterpillar. Like Cummins B 6.7 vs Cat 7.2, Cat C9 vs ISC 8.3, C13 vs ISM 10.9 and C15 (625 HP/2050 Ft Lbs torque) vs yada, yada.

Again, all joking aside, both are fine engines.

No, no, no! Dont pull that old "which shell is the pea under" shell game. V8Q had it listed correctly in the first place

I've owned three Cummins and now own a CAT. There isn't a lick of difference in the maintenance cost in my opinion. I stopped worrying a long time ago about what label was on the engine behind me or in front of me. The engine make wouldn't be on my list of "must have" if I were to buy another RV. Size might be a concern but mostly torque for the job it is intended to do. In my opinion, there are more important decisions I would deal with in selecting an RV. JMO.

I'm considering a newer MH so any examples that you can provide would be very helpful. Thanks

Not since our last trip to Mexico (this winter). I always to a complete tune-up, valve adjustment, brake adjustment, etc on the 91 model bug that belongs to a friend who works the desk at one of our favorite RV parks.

You know they build the bug in Mexico right up until a couple of years ago. Some major steps backwards in them-- back to swing axles, etc.

Ya, I know-- what does this have to do with Cummins vs Caterpillar???

To the original post Cat vs Cummins cost for parts. I have had both. I had the 5.9 Cummins and I never had to pay for a part because it was new and had warranty, but that little Cummins loved to throw pistons. (twice).
Now I have the Caterpillar 3126-E and I have around 38K miles on it with no problems what so ever. I just changed the fuel filter again and I believe that it cost around $27.00 at a FMCA rally. But the filters for both are very comparable. I guess you can say I am a Cat man.

I would be more concerned with horsepower and torque then anything else I have had both and they are both good with that said I would stay away from the 5.9 and 6.7 cummins unless in a 36 footer or less, not enough to power for anything bigger

I delivered new class 8 and class 7 diesel trucks for a living, Cat, Cummins and Detroit, they are all good, its just the old Chevy vs. Ford vs. Chrysler game. Remember, if its not a CAT its a dog!!! Just kidding
