I'm sure glad I live where diesel is dirt cheap, $4.39 (and rising).

And the speculators bid it up hoping that the civil unrest will happen... I've been in the futures trading business for the last 25 years (on staff not trading) and we call it "legalized stealing"...
No one can tell me that futures speculators are not responsible for increasing the price, and by some popular estimates, about $25 per barrel in todays market!!!

I think he's attributing the high prices to normal inflation -- which is about 3% last few years.

Well, I am glad to see at least a few others hate paying high fuel costs besides me. I really don't expect to put to many more rving miles on the truck anytime soon.

Here in town the prices of diesel are anywhere from $4.79 at Valero to $4.95 at Sunoco. I was on the road today for work and when we went through Tupper Lake, NY the diesel was $5.14.

Is there any constitutional way that congress can regulate futures speculation when it has such adverse effects? However - and I know very little about this - maybe we're just using speculators as convenient scapegoats for deeper problems.
According to traditional economics, the price will increase until sales drop and surpluses develop - from that perspective, people who buck the laws of economics and continue unnecessary consumption at this time are hurting all of us. Right? The basic economics we all learned in school are complicated today by the global economy, though. It won't help for us to cut back if the chinese continue, even increase, their consumption.
From what I've been able to glean from the news, the falling value of the dollar may be the the prime culprit rather than futures trading. ???
I feel sorry for the poor moderators here - they have to monitor these threads every second with this topic. But they're letting us do it as long as we maintain polite discourse and avoid partisan politics. Let's try to make their job easier as we search for solutions to a terrible situation for all of us.
