What is the correct way to weigh a TT. I would assume weigh TV and TT together and then come back and weigh just the TV and subtract the two. It this correct?

Right or wrong? Don't know. But what I do is hitch up and drive to the scales. Get the weights of the truck,then trailer. Then drop the trailer and get the truck weighed again. Be sure to get both front and rear axles of the TV independently and together. From this information you can deduce the tongue weight and the actual trailer weight.

Yep, you need to weigh the truck & trailer together, or each axle by axle, then weigh just the unhitched truck.


I'm free of prostate cancer for 5 years now.
All men over age 50 should get an annual PSA blood test. Mine had a low reading, but the yearly jump was significant. The biopsy showed cancer just entering the aggressive stage. Dr. Hackenslash removed it.

I guess I did it wrong. I dropped the TT on the scale, and weighed it by itself. So I know exactly what it weighed. Didn't have to do math either. Don't care what the truck weighed. It wasn't loaded for camping.
Did mess up when I did the tongue weight. Weighed with the WD bars on. Should have got the weight without the bars.

Yep. And if you really want accuracy, go to a truck stop with a split scale (most truck stop scale's are split) so you can weigh each axle of the truck and TT independently. Be sure to weigh the truck with full fuel, fully loaded, with at least 2 adults in the truck. When you bring the TT back for it's weigh in, make sure the TT is fully loaded with full water and supplies.

It won't matter, in my experience the scales aren't that precise (within 20-50 pounds or so, but not in the 5-10 pound range). They are used to weight trucks over 60,000 lbs., so they scoff at our rigs. My truck varied 40 pounds when I did the second weigh within minutes of the first.

Best way to get the tongue weight is to buy a scale specifically designed to lower your TT on to.

Even more better is to weigh each SIDE of the TT seperately. It is possible that the total weight on an axle would be under the limit but have one side more heavily loaded than the other.

Knew I didn't say it right. What I meant, was. I would have liked to have the tongue weight without the WD bars distrabuting the weight to the front of the TV. I had the rear truck tires off the scale, so that all was on there was the TT. But I had the WDH hooked up, and didn't get an accurate weight for the tongue. I weighed the TT alone, then hooked everything back up, and weighed again. Should not have hooked the bars up.

If what you're interested in is the trailer weight just unhitch and weigh the trailer with the tongue on one platform and the axles on the other. No reason to go through any contortions IF that's all you're interested in.
