I am think about building a box to hold my generator and an icechest. Looking at yamaha 3000. Wanting to put it on back of RV Have source to get stainless sheets that have had logos punched in so will be well ventilated for Generator. We travel with Large dog and want to be able to go into places and have generator easy and secure to operate while we go into the store or just pull in and eat. Gets hot in Texas. Also my plug is at the back of the Rig so putting in back of truck and running from there will require a 30' cord
Any way my first question has anyone put his much weight in the back. Figuring 170 for generator, 30 for ice chest and the box at 200
second question. I was thinking about permantly mounting it vs just putting a reciever hitch. (know bumper will not hold it and receiver hitch will not be as secure).
Please give me your thought.

I made a tray for the back of my TT. I welded square tubing to the bottom of the frame and use them like recievers. I have had mine loaded with fire wood and then stood on it to open the rear window cover.

Touch bases with Forest River regarding the welding or bolting of anything on your rear frame. It can go from warranty cancellation to serious permanent damage, as in deforming or breaking your frame. Seems that RV frame manufacturers use a engineering method called "minimally sufficient" to save money. This doesn't leave a lot of "wiggle room" for add ons.

Do you not have a transfer switch in the front of your 5er? Mine does, so I ran a 30 amp cord from the bed of my TV where I haul my generator, under the front LP compartment of the 5er and into the basement where the TS is. Simple.

Just be very careful about loading behind the axles. Anything you place behind the axles reduces the tongue/pin weight and can drastically effect the way your trailer handles.

That is about what I want. I looked on your post and exactly what I want to do and was even considering mounting spare under the rig. Did not have time to look closely was that yours also. Did you get the spare tire mount from dealer or salvage yard. I think it would last longer under the rig out of sun and wheather even covered on the back.
I need to get started. Thanks for heads up on warranty. Mine is up shortly anyway and this is what dealer recommended.

donawilcox,
The spare under the rig, shown in Lantley's link, is what I did. I could have bought a new winch from the dealer for $66. I picked up one on e-bay for $15 including shipping. One local salvage yard wanted $77. When picking thru the bone yard, you want to know whose bones are getting picked.
