I don't want to start a turf war, but I would love to hear from all sides... What is the best quad these days for the dunes?
A little about my situation...I had (back in the day ) a '88 Fourtrax 250R. Loved it!!! We used to ride Glamis, Pismo and Dumont all the time and it was the best quad I ever rode. I sold it like a big idiot in 1995. Years have passed and I now live in Colorado and ride mostly for fun with the kids and DW. Next year, we are planning to head west for a few weeks and I want to get a quad for the dunes (Pismo, Oregon and maybe Dumont on the way home). It will also give me a reason to visit the dunes in the future.
If I could find a cherry 250R I would settle for that. But as I probably won't...Thoughts?
I'd Rather be in Moab!

Yami YFZ450, as close as you'll come to that 2 stroke power.
P.S. I rather be in Moab too!

The 88 250R was a great quad, the 350 Banshees are great and cheap.
Had both and Ive now moved to the 4 strokes and wont go back. All the new 4 stroke tech is just awesome and ridiculously convenient at the fuel station.
The 450 class machines are most like what your used too- they make power on par with classic 2 stroke and have a flatter torque curve
The Yammie 450 is a great quad cant go wrong with one
The kawi 450 is a great quad (I like it a bit better than the yammie because it has an aluminum frame, reverse gear, and its injected.)
Ive ridden the honda 400's very nice as well.
Youll feel at home on these-450's
For something totally different try a 700 Raptor.
I have the most fun on the raptor 700. Yhe kawi and yami 450 are a tiny bit quicker but not by more than a length or so , but the big raptor is so comfortable and its easier to ride than a 450 class machine. I go back to it everytime. Its like an easy chair with a jetpack strapped to it. Almost any gear will work and you can leave it in third and ride all day-
come around a corner and see a wall of sand - roll it on your up roll off- its ridiculously easy and fun and itll go fast enough to bring tears to your eyes..
Everybodys gonna love what they have and truth is its hard to get a bad one these days and the new honda with irs looks great-
but when you get a raptor 700 everyone from a first timer to an expert EVERYONE can ride a raptor 700 in the deep dunes on day one and have fun.
Let us know how you go.

Have to give another vote to the Raptor 700! A set of paddles and it will climb anything you point it at!

In my opinion... no question... Yamaha 700 Raptor right now. And I'm a Honda guy. The Raptor is comfortable, easy to ride, EFI, powerful, fast.... the best all around sport bike right now.

ok, the honda trx450R is my choice. They will all do well these days but the honda is my favorite for the dunes.
