Anyone driving a Dodge 3500 2WD Auto- saw one on cars.com and contacted the dealer for more info (salesman as usual will have to check with svc dept). Asked if the 2005 model had the fuel pump in the tank. I think it does. Does anyone know about the fuel pump location. With diesel at $4.30+ I'm thinking a 2WD might be good enough. Thanks, Dave
We have a 2003 Ram 3500 2WD single rear axle, Auto with the Cummins Diesel. Nearly 90,000 trouble free miles. About 40,000 of that towing a 15,000 lb Excel 5'er.
2WD has certainly been "good enough" for me.
i had a 2004 and now have a 2006. Yes, I believe the lift pump is in the tank...
Big difference between 04, 05 and 06 is subtle difference in behavior of the tranny..
04 has tow/haul mode, but would not go into OD in tow/haul
05 has tow/haul mode, but would go into OD in tow/haul
06 has a tow/haul mode and will go into OD in tow/haul, also has a separate OD off mode. This is also the first model year with support for an exhaust brake with the auto tranny..
My FIL has an 05 2WD dually 3500 and it has been a great truck...

My 3500 Dodge 04.5 came with the the fuel pump attached to the side of the engine. Within 20K, the pump went dead. Under warranty , the dealer replaced the fuel pump and put it back into the fuel tank. There was a recall by Chrysler to replace all fuel pumps back into the fuel tank. 60K later, no problems I also had the Dodge dealer install the Pac Exhaust Brake system before I ever drove it off the lot. I would not tow without an exhaust brake.
My 04.5 had the fuel pump on the engine till 65000 miles,when it quit.Relaced (in the tank) by Dodge on the warrantee was never notified of a recall.
My truck is SRW,3500,LB,pulling about 14000#,30,000+ miles.
There have been a couple of times when 4WD would have been good to have.
BTW I have the 4.10 so the MPG is somewhat lower than some.
Yes it's in the tank, but now folks install a draw straw in the tank ,and mount a fass, or other system on the rails. I think the in tank is the way to go though, it's used on most every car out there.
