FWIW, use the red ribbon idea and tie the ribbon onto the crank for the antenna as a reminder.

You would do better to have the ribbon up front, either on the steering wheel or on the seat, so that you see it before you move the vehicle. If you leave it on the antenna crank, you might not notice it when getting into the vehicle from the Driver's side door...as is apparently what happened to the OP. JMHO

I've been wanting to replace the bat wing Winegard with an omni directional disc.

My M/H keys are on a lanyard. When I put the antenna up I hang the lanyard on the crank. Can't go wihtout it.

I can't say with any factual backing, but I've found that some of these omni-directional antennas aren't as good as the directional units, as far as picking up signals. That may not be a problem in certain areas where signals are strong, but you might find it hard to get any local stations out in the rural areas.....but if you've also got satellite, you probably don't care

My PO left to me a diamond shaped card, sorta like the infamous Baby on Board cards. I clip it to the crank, and when the antenna goes up, the card gets clipped to the inside mirror. Hard to ignore even when I use the cab door -- though I've tried.

If you broke the arms or gear assembly-maybe time for a sat-upgrade.I use both and replaced the actual antenna on my winegard arms with a Active 5 DX antenna-no more turning the antenna, its done with a remote and has reception as good as cable tv-bought it off Ebay from distributor in LasVegas and its from Japan not China! and can be used in harsh marine enviroments.I did a couple of cuts with a hand held grinder to the wineguard brackets and cut a small section of chainlink fence pipe -reused the clamps and it was done,if I remember correctly the antenna was $40+- plus shipping.

Wire in a switch that flags the driver with red LED and beeper. Energizes when antenna off of rest position, and ignition on.
Took about 1/2 hour to install and has saved my antenna several times.
Also, connected beeper to transmission backup switch after backing into wifes civic.
