I’ve read with interest the recent threads concerning thefts of and from RVs, so I thought I would pass along this news, which appeared in this morning’s local newspaper:

ROBBERS STEAL LCD TVS FROM NEW RVS
Coles County (Illinois) Crime Stoppers program and the Charleston and Mattoon police departments are asking for information on burglaries to two recreational vehicle dealerships.
An announcement said the first burglary took place April 2 at Owen Motor Sports in Charleston, where a chain link fence was cut and three campers were entered and four LCD Flat screen TVs stolen. On May 1, at Cross County RV Center in Mattoon, four campers were entered and four flat screen TVs were taken.

I can only add that both RV storage lots are in rural areas, near major highways and surrounded by cornfields.

Probably trying to steal enough to make the money to buy gas! Flatscreen TV should be worth a few gallons!!

Unfortunately, here in Illinois ... thieves are becoming more and more aware that new RV's come with flat screen tv's ... which are easy pickin' for any scumbucket with a small prybar.

They are also stealing propane bottles off the front of rigs ... at my storage lot.

I chained the gas bottles (only thing that's going to solve is make it harder for me to take the bottles off for refills).

But, hey, at least I feel like I'm doing something.

Now, please, we don't need to hear from any of you "I would never store a trailer at a storage lot" people ... I ... and others ... have no choice. Our subdivision does not allow RV parking in front or along side your home.

Thefts from RV's in storage lot is really nothing new. In addition to thefts transients will often break into them and sleep in them for often days at a time. Why not? In some storeage yards a thief or transient only has to either hop over or crawl under a fence. Most semi-rural storage areas have no security other than a fence and an occaisional walk through by the owner.

What the heck! Doesn't anyone own "junk yard dogs" anymore! A lot of Rottweiler, Dobbies and German Shepherds would love to be brought home from a Amimal Shelter and given a new life as "the nasty killer hound" at the RV Dealer! WARNING-MEAN!

This problem is growing as more people realize the value of electronics being put in some of the new RV's. I am a dealer and we had 2 break in's over new years weekend(same crooks both time) The good news is they got caught! Bad news is they all got a slap on the wrist. 4 under age 18, one over.

Years ago we had a used car lot with a fenced yard that he kept dogs in for security. One night a guy jumps the fence, gets attacked by the dogs, gets caught, sues the dealer because of the dogs and WINS! What is this world coming too!

Portable Solar battery operated hot wire fence!
You can buy them out of any horse catalog.

My neighbor got tired of kids breaking into his MH when it was parked.
Four stakes in the ground around MH. Wire set at window or door level which ever works best.

It's one thin wire that packs one helofa punch, thiefs can't see it at night readily, till it's too late!

If you've been around horses you know this wire can bring a grown man to his knees.

Why waste the taxpayer's money catching them if you're not going to punish them? I don't care if they are 12 or 92. If you don't punish then they are right back to the same game. Just maybe a little better at it.
Heck what I should be doing is inventing an RV burgular alarm and selling it door-to-door.

Fun is that stuff that happens in between mistakes.

I at my local RV dealer the other day picking up parts and I heard them talking about someone taking new flat screens out of the TTs. They now remove all the televisions from the new rigs when they come in and reinstall them on delivery.
