That's been my experience over the last 30 years and I always cool or freeze the stuff at home before putting it into the RV frig/refer. On the road when replenishing I put the warm non freezer stuff in the regular RV refer and the fresh frozen stuff or things I want to freeze like left overs in my NORCOLD MRFT-40 Freezer.

Put a wireless thermomter indoor-outdoor sensor in the refrig or freezer. Then you can tell without opening the door how much it's cooling down. Opening the door slows down the cooling process. Continue to use the wireless thermometer to monitor the temperature when there is food in the refrigerator. RV refrigerators vary a lot in temperature depending on the temperature outside, and can get TOO COLD and freeze veggies and fruits, or they can get TOO HOT and the milk and meat will spoil, and the ice cream will melt!
You can buy the wireless thermometers at Wal-Mart for about $10.00. I'd never want to be without one - so I can adjust temperature of refrigerator as needed.

Actually, I'm going to agree with MrCamper. Mine takes 2-3 hours for the freezer to get to about -10 deg, about another hour for the frig to cool off to about 38 deg. And yes, outside temp is a definite factor. If the temp is 90-100 deg, I will wait until dark to turn it on. I also have a small, battery operated fan in the frig to circulate cold air. They are available at CW for about 5 bucks.

This is a Great Idea! I have a Wireless Remote ($18)from WM with Alarms for monitoring freezing temps and too much heat in the interior of the TT, but since you brought this up, going to stick the Remote Sensor in the Fridge before trips so we know for sure when we can load up! Thanks for the tip!

If we're leaving home at noon I plug in the fridge at 7 am and put ice packs in it. Right before we leave and I want to load the food it's nice and cold.

I think the newer ones cool down quicker then the older ones. Our old MH took almost 2 days to really get cold. Our 2005 makes ice in about 3 hours.
