My wife and I are planning to see our daughter the end of June in Chicago. We have a 32 ft motorhome and do not tow. Has anyone been to the Dunes' state park, or know anything about it? The description says that the train to Chicago is close. Is there any site in the park we should stay away from. Thanks

I was going to volunteer there, but in talking to LE Rangers from another park, I learned that it is surrounded by a very bad area and that crime sometimes spills into the park. I decided to volunteer elsewhere.

I've stayed here a number of times without any problems. Very nice park. Train station is about a 1/2 mile walk or bike ride from the park. Lake Michigan beach is about 1/4 mile. Try it. You will not be disappointed.

We liked Indiana Dunes State Park. I'm pretty sure you can fit in most campsites. Here's a link to another thread on the forum about the state park. Also, if you click on the first link in my signature and scroll down to the 5th and 6th pictures from the end, you will find a couple pictures of the campground.

We stayed there for a week last June in our 35 footer. No problems at all. We thought it was a very nice place and will go back someday. I think our site # was 79 and it was plenty big enough for our rig.

It's surrounded by a national park, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, which also has it's own campground.
I've camped there many times over the last 20 years and never had a problem.

The whole campground was remodeled I think four years ago. The sites are nice (paved) however some have a lot of sand. We were in #8 last year and would book it or #7. Both are nice. Bathrooms/showers all looked to be nicely remodeled. As stated the train station is just outside the park and I believe it took us less then an hour to get to downtown Chicago. It was a great way to go and I wouldn't even consider driving it. You probably couldn't get a reservation now anyway but I think I would avoid holiday weekends as this State Park gets packed at those times.
