I'm going to Sequoia Natl Park for Memorial Day wknd in my truck camper. Hoping to get there early enough to get a spot in one of the non reservable campgrounds. Maybe like Azalea, near Grant Grove Village.

After Mem Day I'm going to spend a few days exploring outside the park around Shaver Lake. Any tips on disbursed camping in the Natl Forest around there?

Thanks,

Ralph

Ralph,

That is the Sierra National Forest. Here is their camping info site..

I looked at your RV travels page and it looks like you are at least moderately adventurous and your rig is about the same size and capability as the Tiger except yours isn't a 4x4. You might want to investigate some of my photos and notes about a trip which included that area in fall 2006:

full trip photo album

photos of the Tiger at various spots on that trip, including dispersed camps

If you are really brave/crazy, try Kaiser Pass Road. Be warned: much of it is very bumpy and narrow. I went in on a weekday and had to back up 9 times to yield right-of-way (some of which the other guy should have yielded, but that's another story). Road goes to Florence Lake and Edison Lake. One of the Tiger photos above shows my campsite by the Edison Lake road.

Less adventurous, but still partly off pavement, is the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway. My Tiger, 87 inches wide not counting mirrors, was the largest vehicle at the little campground at the far point of this loop.

This was a great area to explore. Looking things up for you has made me want to go back!!!

Tiger,

Thanks for the tips and photos. I'm only "moderately moderately adventurous", so I won't make it everywhere you went.

I see Sequoia Natl Park is forecasted for freezing to below at night this weekend. Maybe I need to stay at a lower elevation than 6500'.

I got snowed on a bit lower than 6500 feet last June. Be prepared. You should be able to take a little cold in that nice camper of yours as long as it isn't cold enough for a long enough time to worry about freezing your water system. Unless the weather forecast is truly bad, it often warms up in the daytime. Plus, the cold nights might keep the crowds down. Have a great trip!

On the way to Shaver from Fresno you can take the road towards Dinky Creek (Dinkey Creek Rd). There is a number of roads that off shoot the road along dinky creek and you can boondock down most of them.

I finally got around to the Lake Shaver / Dinkey Creek area for 8 nights of camping. Lots of campgrounds to choose from and I saw many people boondocking and many likely spots. I did boondock 2 nights near Courtright Reservoir, although very close to the road (little traffic, though).

Had a great time, great weather and I'd like to go again and try the Huntington Lake area next.

My RV Travels page has all the spots I stayed in. My favorite was Swanson Meadow, past Dinkey Creek a few miles. Small USFS campground (8 sites) and I was the only one there both nights (a week apart).

I'm now in Kingman, AZ which starts my trek to Montana (via AZ/NM/CO/WY). Lots of great camping ahead, I'm sure.

You can boondock in the Big Meadows area between the parks, only requirement is fire permit if not in a marked campsite.
