Any advice about the Durango RR Trip. Will be trying for Sunday the 25th of May or Monday. Presume less crowd pressure on Monday. WE have a class A and would like suggestions about camping in Silverton or Durango with a train ride one way and the bus back. Any advice about which train car? And is the route north as bad as folks here suggest. We are heading for Wyoming after the Durango visit and it seems the shortest and most attractive route but the wife absolutely hates looking off into space when it starts
right outside her window. Thanks for any ideas. John

We just got through discussing this very subject on this forum. I recommend taking the bus up (45 min?) and the train back (3 hours).

Get an open car. You can see SO MUCH better. We stayed in an RV park in Silverton just off the main drag in town. Can't remember the name. Or, you can drive through town toward Animas Forks (ghost town) and boobdock. There's a really nice spot and we've seen lots of people there. Or, drive north of Silverton to Ouray or Ridgeway. There's a really nice state park, Dutch Charlie, north of Ridgeway.

I agree with the open car. We did this trip last year and stayed at the United Campground in Durango. They have a trolley that takes you directly to the train depot. We took the train to Silverton, spent a few hours there and came back. It was amazing. We traveled with three small children, all under the age of 9 and they loved it. The United Campground is right on the river, if your lucky you can get one of the "Riverview" spots.

I hope you enjoy it.

What's Boobdocking??? LOL!!! Is that like parking overnight in the lot at a adult club or something???

Just kidding, one little typo got a good chuckle

Ride in an open car to get the full effect of the steam engine. Be sure to take jackets for everyone...might get chilly; might not. The weather in May/June can be iffy.

My advice on the train trip is get on the right side of an open car if you go from Durango to Silverton and on the left side if you go the other way. That puts you on the side facing the river gorge.

Bring safety glasses or sun glasses that wrap around the face, cinders.

We got there too late to get an open car. After seeing soot on the faces of some of the open car folks DW was glad we were inside.

DW: "Honey, How did we get to be so old?"
DH: "Lucky I guess, it sure beats the alternative"
