the only thing they did for me was put a piece of sheet metal around the burner and put a thermostat thing in with a rivet and if it gets too hot(fire) the burner will shut down, THAT IS IT.

The 3 year old 2862 on a 2005 used Montana I bought had just failed (ammonia leak) prior to purchase so the seller agreed to take another $1000 off the price. I contacted Dometic and they were sorry they could not help. So for just over $300 I bought and installed a larger, frost free, Whirlpool Apt Size Fridge at Lowes and installed it. Works for me as we're either plugged in or within 4-8 hours of plugging in. Besides being larger, with normal size shelves, its Frost-Free and cools down COLD in 45 minutes. The only complications were that I had to sand down some "high spots" in the RV woodwork as 24" wide is apparently an estimate since both were the same width per specs. Its in there tight now! Also, I had to add more insulation at the top and bottom to eliminate gaps to the outdoors. The Whirlpool is a little shorter in height but deeper.
We had our recall done in OR last July. In August one of the refrig failed. That's when I did some research and found out about the silly recall 'fix' they were doing. I called Camping World to ask about replacement. They said they would charge 1 hr to check it out and hourly labor to install the unit because Dometic only paid them to remove it not install it. When we got to Vegas for the winter we went to Johnnie Walker RV. They checked it out, ordered a new one, replaced it - no charge. So you may want to call around if the unit fails even after the recall is done. I've heard alot of them have.
I also only found out about the recall while looking for other Dometic issues on RV.net. I took my unit to a dealer this morning and they told me I didn't have to have anything fixed because I didn't show on their list. I pulled out the letter from the April 08 recall that listed my serial number series. Dealer called Dometic and got the information they needed and installed the shields and installed a new shut-off with a manual switch, as opposed to the blow off style that was on it. It helped me out a lot to have the information available to show the dealer, since they did not have the current data. Doesn't make me happy about this issue, but makes me feel better that I have over 745,000 friends out there with similar issues. Let hope that the 0.005% that will develop this issue are the ones sitting in a lot that will never get sold and no one gets hurt.
We had a Heartland Bighorn 3400RL back in early May 2008 and learned from the Heartland Owners' Forum that the extended Dometic recall did include our refer. We were in Fountain, CO for other repairs at Camping World so they ordered the shield and high temp relay switch and installed within 30 minutes at no charge. Great service staff! We have since traded for Heartland Landmark Augusta with the 14 CF Elite four-door refer. Hope it doesn't show up in any recall.
Best wishes to those of you having trouble getting service.

I can't believe it, i just purchased a new 2008, 348R Everest that was built in March of this year and my Dometic 2862 is on the recall list. How can a manufacturer get away with this BS.

First off, Dometic does not produce these cooling units. They are made by an outside source. The same that makes them for Norcold, who also has a large recall going for the same reason. Norcold does replace the cooling unit but, with the same one.
As far as the Dometic recall goes, the shielding is in place to keep the chemicals from the cooling unit away from the open flame. If the burner was lit and the cooling unit failed, the pressure from the amonia blowing out would easily blow out the flame before it would catch fire.
All of these recall model year id's are for the fridge, NOT the rig it is installed in. You could have an 09 and be affected.
Any dealer or service center that does business with Dometic that refuses or charges at all for this should be turned in to Dometic.
We do ALOT of these and we do not get alot from Dometic to do them. We do build a reputation with people that what ever their needs are, they are important to both them and us. We get alot of new people from local dealers who feel it is not important to service the people who have done business with them. So to all the dealers out there that think the compensation is too small, send them to us...we'll take good care of your customers!

Dometic has been replacing cooling units only if cooling unit was damaged as a result of the affected problem in the burner chamber. Otherwise the shield kit is installed on the affected units only. Our shop has been doing these for some time, over the last year.
