Oh yeah,

Finally camping again this weekend. Going to Curry Hammock SP in Marathon in the keys!

We've got 2 sites booked (4 and 5) as it is 2 families going!

Taking our canoes and the pool floats and we are hoping we have a great time. We haven't been there before........

Just got back from Curry Hammock this past Sunday. 1st time there and just loved it. Had site 15 right on the beach and across from the bathouse. There are 28 sites in the park, no motorized watercraft allowed as the seagrass is protected. Weather was in the upper 80's and the sun was hot but the constant breeze off the water made it comfortable to be outside day & night. My only complaint is that the bathouse needs to be air conditioned or at least have some ceiling fans to move the air so after you try to dry off from a shower you don't need to take second one. Highly recommend Curry Hammock.

You will love it! We were there late April on site 19 (on the ocean) and were thrilled. The sites are large, clean, and full of gravel, not dirt. We had to deal with the tail end of the beach renovation project but hopefully they will be done by the time you go. They dumped 27 million pounds of sand on the beach to give the turtles a better nesting habitat. Note that the beach is more of a wading beach as it is very shallow and not great for swimming.

I have been to the Keys before, as I live in Ft Lauderdale, so it is hard for ME to call it a beach - but it is what it is! A beach can be found a little further north........that IS a beach!
I wish we could have gotten beach sites but I was just happy to get A site.
We are so looking forward to it.
We are bringing our canoes and our snorkle stuff and bikes and hope it isn't 96 degrees and that there IS a breeze from the beach.

Thanks everyone,

Jo

Hey guys, when you mentioned sites #15 and 19 being 'on the beach', does that mean you can drag a kayak/canoe from your site to the water? And how far do you have to go to get any water depth? I was wondering if my son could wet a line from the campsite if we had a waterfront site, or if we had to go paddling to fish.

Thanks

Randy

Tarpon...

Yes your son can dip a line in the water in F/O your site.. I did that last year there and land a few nice manngrove snappers ( see pictures) . Also witnessed some catching small sharks at night right from the beach.

The park staff has built dunes in front of the waterfront sites and laid tons of sand expanding the beach which now requires a bit of a walkaround to get to the water...but still very nice.

When we arrived, we were instructed to stay off the new dune or burm. Site # 15 is right next to the walkway onto the beach. It is very easy to carry, drag or wheel your kayak to the water. It is very shallow but you can wade out and there were plenty of kayaks out while we were there. They can be rented at the main gate also.

I can't believe all of the sites that are available at Curry Hammock. Right now I'm looking at sites on the ocean side of the park and I was hoping someone would tell me if site 15 has a good view of the ocean. I didn't know if the sanded which has been added to the beach recently has obstructed the view. I was also wondering if the vegetation around site 15 blocks the ocean view.

And finally, if you had a choice between sites 13 & 15, which would you choose and why.

Thanks in advance for your help.
