I'm new at family camping so bear with me.

Do kids tend to get more bumps & scrapes while camping than they do at home? The camaraderie seems to run very high between the kids at the campground and they run around in packs. I've run the whole gamut on safety lectures with them, and I know they don't want me up their backs all the time, nor do I want to be.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how they handle this? How much freedom do you give them, ... Thanks

How much freedom did you get as a kid? Remember, they're kids.

Just get a good full featured first aid kit, it will handle the scrapes and cuts that are bound to happen! We got a pair of good 2 way family radios, to keep track somewhat. Then let 'em go! Oh, teach them what poison oak/poison ivy looks like!

Same thing we did. So far we have had splinters, scuffed knees, and a smashed finger with a nasty cut. But hey me and my dh have been fine! :-)

Bring benedryl...our first trip out we found we needed a fully stocked kids medicine cabinet. Little dd developed a bad case of welts from an allergic reaction to something. That being said...2 trips and no more owies than we would have had at home - but we are still early in this whole camping lifestyle....

Good first aid kit, and ground rules.

Always stay together, buddy system, never go anywhere especially the shower house/privy alone, don't go anywhere with strangers, find a "DNR" employee if lost, etc., not allowed in campers/tents of "new" friends...must stay at our site after dark. Those are our ground rules.

Last year while camping in Indiana a 4 year old boy attached himself to my 6yo son. I didn't really mind, he was very sweet and my son had a playmate. But his family never seemed to care much about the amount of time he spent at our site, never introduced themselves to us or checked us out....

I haven't even gone camping yet, and you should see the bruises on both of my kids (almost 2 and 4) shins! Wherever they play, they bang themselves up, and it looks like the shins are the most banged up part.

I don't think they are in more danger of being hurt, but I do think ground rules are good. They need to follow the rules of the campgrounds. be considerate of other campers. If your going to be around water please take extra care.
Our one rule was if I can't see you and you can't see me you have gone to far, but then we never camped in campgrounds only dispersed camping which gave the kids a lot more freedom

After reading these posts, all I can add is common sense needs to rein supreme.
