I had a 26' TT and it had a 13,500 A/C. I would usually run it on low and on really hot days move it to high so it would cycle. Last weekend in our 5er, we turned ours on a day where it was in the mid 80's. I wasn't feeling well, the 5er wasn't getting any shade, and it was warm inside. I turned the A/C on low and it ran for an hour or two without turning off. Once I turned the fan on high, it was cycling just fine.

Does this sound normal for a 31' 5er with two slides and 13,500 A/C? I figured a non-humid day in the mid 80's it would be fine on low. I'm wondering how it will do on a 95ยบ day with high humidity on high?

Maybe it would be best to run on high during the day and low at night?

A 31' 5er has a lot more cubic feet to cool than a 26 TT. A/C's are really meant to dehumidify the air before it cools the air. If you say it was hot, but not humid, your problem is right there.

Other than that your coils were freezing up and blocking air flow. Not enough air through the coils will make them freeze up. Next time set the thermostat to where the unit JUST comes on, bet that will work just fine.

One A/C will not carry a 31' 5er in direct sun. The solutions are a 2nd AC and/or park in a shade.

To check the A/C, turn it on high and let it run about 10 minutes, measure the air temp at the air inlet and again at the air outlet. The leaving air should be 18 to 20 dF lower than the inlet air. If you get this kind of number it is doing all it can.

When was the last time you cleaned the filter? Also, the manufacturers are bad about not sealing the inlet from the outlet duct and capacity is lost and can often lead to coil freeze up problem, especially on low fan, Generally you should not use the low fan speed.

Run it on high you need all that air to keep from freezing up your coils and to get max efficiency. I never run mine on low.

we have a 30' fiver with one 13.5 a/c

we just camped last weekend in 100+ degree weather with no problem. we were in full sun and the a/c kept up just fine. of course we have dry heat here, so that might of made a difference.

I have a 36' with a 15Kbtu and it will cycle even in full sun on a 100 day. No need for two air. If you have to replace then step up to the 15 but that will cause issues if you are running a 3000 watt gen. Have a back ground in A/c and agree with the other poster if it rund continous and does not have the air flow it will ice up. Mine also has the duct work but blows most of the air out bottom of the unit. If not useing the bedroom open the vent at bottom of unti and close the doors or pull curtains that way the living area will get the cooling.

You may have an air leak. Internal baffle, connctions or the ducting itself.
I am pretty sure 5 to 10% of my air is leaking into the roof cavity as some cool air will drift out of a removed outlet cover. My internal bafffle was allowing the inlet and outlet air to mix due to a poor tape job.

Estesbubba,

I am about to find out this weekend just how well a 13.5 a/c unit will work.
We have the same fiver at you and we are going to Marathon in the Keys to
Curry Hammock State Park. NO trees at all! Just lots of sand and water!

So I will have my a/c on HI and hope it does the job..........

Jo it will be hot, humid and hopefully some beach breezes.

BTW,

My DH turned on the a/c at 4PM yesterday, I put groceries in trailer at 6PM
yesterday - we have trailer at home, parked under a tree so it was shaded -
when I was putting the groceries away - it was 84 degrees in there!

Our friends went camping last weekend to a county park, no trees near them,
they said it took 18 hours before the trailer got cooled down.....

Oh boy - the Keys should be interesting this weekend! I'll be in the water alot!!

Weve got one 15k on our 34' montana and its no where near adequate, not even close! Im adding a second low profile ac over the bedroom with its own dedicated power cord that'll be stowed in the underbelly. That way If Im at a campsite with only a 20 amp service I can still sleep in a cool bedroom. That opens up some nice wooded sites for us that were previously inaccessable.
