Here in CA you have to book 7 months ahead of time unless there is a cancellation, and the most popular campgrounds are booked within minutes after the reservations become available.

A guy on Craigslist was advertising for help to get a campsite in Santa Cruz, CA, so I emailed him and suggested that he keep checking one of the less popular campgrounds on reserveamerica.com to see if there had been any cancellations.

He emailed me back about 3 or 4 days later and said that he had found a site someone had cancelled, he was stoked.

With the price of fuel being what it is, I wouldn't be surprised if you were able to find a site become available due to cancellation if you keep calling around.

Memorial Day may be the single biggest camping weekend of the year! That happened to me once. Never again.

Our campgrounds around West Point Lake(Ga.) are booked out for the whole week. We have four campgrounds and there was only a couple sites on the Alabama side available on Sunday but the host said that people were paying for a whole week just to be guaranteed a site for the weekend.

WOW! I had no idea it was so tough to find camping places. We own our site and I guess I just haven't had enough experience going to different places. Good luck! It's a bummer to want to go somewhere and have nowhere to go.

We're in the same boat! I tried every campground within about 100 miles or so. Nothing. I was able to find one in Savannah, but DH nixed that! Says too far. We're not willing to take a chance with a walk-up. So, we are camping in the backyard and having a BBQ on Sunday for our friends who are also staying home.
