Ya know when I talk to my barber he is doing fine, when I talk the my RV dealer he is having a great year, when I talk to my cousin the farmer he wants lower fuel costs but is doing well, when I talk to my friend a baker and restaurant owner he is a little slow until summer but doing just fine and expanding.
Point is, with business if you don't have a model or the where with all to market what you have then go flip burgers or do somethin else, period, stop the whine.

Fuel/energy cost has impacted everything. A local low end country club is down about 35 members from last year so they have a $50K smaller budget. The owner of a local seven screen theater stated this week it is harder to get people to drop money on going to the movies.
Yet I wanted change for a $1 for the gumball machine and stood behind a kid that was not short on food at home who had just bought at least one $8 ticket then dropped $10.50 on popcorn, etc.
Businesses are closing yet McDonalds, Arby's, Dominos and Dunkin Donuts are moving to town or building new locations from scratch.
Successful business models always replace the other type. Those who learn to reduce normal business expenses equal to the increase of energy costs will do OK.
There are new industries being born just because of higher energy costs. Gas is not $.25 like it was in 1973 when I bought my first new car for $2150.
One either increases income or decreases out go. Debt is the wild card in the world today more than energy costs as I see it.

Gale we also drive the USA every year and sometimes go from Mi to Oregon and Washington others to Az and Fl. We are well aware of fuel prices (being on fixed incomes). We see the poverty across the US from the Appalachia's to Texas to Mississippi. This poverty has been there forever and nothing has been done to relieve most of it. We do see businesses closed but then a lot of those I think were marginal to begin with. I agree also that there are a lot of restaurants you can't get seated in because they are full. A lot of those aren't your McDs. We see casinos packed across the country. Concerts public events packed. Bars packed. Costco packed. We never go to Walmart but even the poor pack that store.
The economy is fragile right now but we do witness a slow growth and from family to friends we are seeing most employed and more buying the big items.
If there is anything that needs a hand most it is the middle class but then we have been beaten on for years and now are being reduced further.

Okay, why in the heck did gas just go from 4.09 this morning to 4.25 this afternoon in Washington State?????
I saw that the 'per barrel' price went down again today too...
Is it just a "SHELL" thing?? I'll need to drive around a bit and see what the other "Top Tier" stations are at.. Well heck, I should check ARCO, just to see where they are at.. They are usually around .10 lower per gallon then Shell, but I've never liked ARCO gas.... Just my own prejudice, so don't get all "flamie" on me..
The same thing here in Medford, Oregon area, $4.09 on Thursday and $4.29 today at 76 & Shell, at Pilot it was $3.99 this is exit 33 at Central Point, Oregon. On Thursday night ABC news had a segment on oil from the US and they said that we export more oil than we import. They are sticking it to us as usual.

From what I found on the net its around the BP Cherry Point refinery not able to restart the crude distillation unit there and that caused a spike in fuel prices along the coast.
