I am looking at a new trailer that comes with a power awning. The salesperson said that I could tie down the awning while people on this site says no....It is a Forest River Flagstaff/Rockwood. Can I tie down the awning? I like to camp at the shore and really need to be able to tie it down. What is the truth about these power awnings?

Dave, We do not even have ours yet but I have been hearing that you should not tie them down. I hope that these power awning do not become a real pain in the butt. We went 6 years with the old awning and not a single problem even in high winds at Myrtle Beach. I will keep an eye on this thread for others to answer. Thanks for bringing the topic up. I will ask my dealer at our PDI.

Do these new power awnings have an auto roll up feature for high winds or an auto "drain" pitch, whatever it`s called! feature for rain?

1-303-469-3324 x8 is Carefree Customer Support. Nice lady! Just got off the phone with her, it is NOT recommended to tie the awning down.
"If wind or extended periods of rain are expected, stow the awning rolled up in the travel position."

Not on the cheap ones they are putting on Forest River products. I am going to speculate that Dometic is giving the manufactures a fantastic deal even cheaper then the conventional awnings. I hope they work.

A lot of this mis-information is harked by the old timers, who had power awnings a few years back, when that was the rule. Now days it really depends on brand and how the manufacture set up the RV. We have an Eclipse by Carefree and our can be tied down. The manufacture installed a disconnect switch for the wind sensor, so it is not a factor as it used to be. Also, the Eclipse can be adjusted up and down just like the old manual models, so it will shed rain easier, hang lights, add a sunscreen and as I said, can be tied down for wind. Find out which you have, how it is installed and then go from there. Don't listen to someone make a blanket statement, when they don't know what they are talking about.

The Electric awnings cost significantly more, to OEMs, than manual awnings.

If I feel the need to "tie it down" I'm rolling it up. Just me I guess.

robsouth beat me to the punch. I've never been one to tie down the awning on my trailer. I want to be able to close it up quickly if I need to, and if it's windy enough to be tied down, I don't want it out.
