You guys have been so helpful I figured I would try again. My hot water heater will light and stay lit for a few minutes then go out. Does anyone have any good solutions? I have had a few ideas but want to get a consensus. Thanks

If it is a DSI (electronic ignition), most likely a flame sensor.
If it is a standing pilot, could be the thermocouple.
These are comon scenarios and other things could also caust the same problem such as a defective board on the DSI model or a bad gas valve on the SP model.

Sorry I wasnt very specific. It's a manual light system and the entire flame including the pilot light goes out after a few minutes. One time yesterday it did stay lit long ehough to heat the water but then went out again ( pilot light included)

So can anyone tell me which one the thermo-coupler is? Is it the pilot light it self or the tube right next to it? Thanks

It is the very small "tube" that has a bulb inside the pilot light flame when lit.
It screws into the bottom of the gas valve. About $6.00 @ HD or Lowes.
It is NOT the 1/4" aluminum gas/pilot-light tube.

Check the plumbing for the gas that goes into the area where the flame is. I had a similar problem awhile back and it turned out to be a spider web which was preventing the proper flow of gas.

The thermocouple has to be heated by the pilot light. If it doesn't then the heater will kick off as a safety feature. See if the pilot light flame is making contact with the bulb as a prev. poster described. It could be spider webs ect. blocking the flame. Pipe cleaners work well to help clean these out. Or could be bad if it is making contact with the flame. Same thing on windy days if the flame is blown off the thermo it will cut itself off. Hope this helps Mike
