I am taking my fifth wheel out for the first time (never owned a trailer b4) and we are stayng at aplace with full hookups available. So, do i connnect my blackwater (septic) tank hose up to the hole in the ground at our campsite and keep the velve open all weekend so each time we flush it goes directly thru my tank into the campgrounds system? or do i llet it fill up oer the weekend and then empty the tank when we are leaving at the end of the weekend? I was planning on leaving th valve open but after reading a post below it seems like there is a chance that the solids can collect in my tank while the liquids go down into the campsites drain. Any advice would be appreciated. thanks

Best thing you can do is to put hose in the drain and leave the valves on the trailer closed, at least to the black tank. You can choose to leave the gray valve open. I leave both closed and also make sure there is liquid in the black tank prior to use. That way the waste won't get stuck to the bottom quite as quick. They also have stuff you can dump in the tank to help disolve the waste and paper and also help with the smell. by leaving both closed, when ready to dump do the black first then wash out the thing with the gray tank. Good Luck and Happy Camping

Like Dandy Dan said, leave valve closed for black tank until almost full. It's nice to keep the grey water tank valve closed also since when you empty both tanks, (black first), then you flush the hose out with the grey water.

It's also a good idea to get some water into your black tank before you go poopin. Think of dropping mashed potatoes into a frying pan from 3 feet high. Now drop the same mashed potatoes into a bathtub full of water. See my point? You'll get "poop pyramids" in your tank if you don't. Then you have to flush and shake and flush and what a pain in the _ _ _!!

Enjoy.

the best money you can spend will be on a tank sprayer system, fairly cheap and you can dump at your convenience, not wait until it is 3/4 full. Actually the best purchase would be either a sewer solution or macerator pump and get rid of that stinky slinky. it changes the worst job of RVing into a fun experience, OK maybe a slight exaggeration.

Here is how I do it. This assumes you use your shower for the purpose intended. If you are in a CG for one night leave the valves closed then in the morning before leaving, fill the black tank to 2/3 with water and dump it, then dump the Grey tank. I don't like to travel with full tanks. For longer stays, leave the grey tank valve open until the day before you are going to dump then close it. Keep the black tank valve closed. When you dump, fill the black tank 2/3 with water then dump and dump the grey tank after the black. Whenever you dump, put a few gallons of water into both tanks after you dump.
Never leave the black tank valve open. The liquids will drain out and leave the solids in the tank.

On my toilet I can hold the flush lever so that the flapper valve stays open and water runs into the toilet and into the tank.

Check and see if your bathroom sink drains in to the black tank. I think it is pretty common, as I had a trailer like that. I used to just leave the bathroom sink on for a bit and look down the flapper every few minutes until I was close to full. The tank level indicators can never be trusted.
