Well, I have been thinking solar and then saw a Honda 2000i generator. Seems like a nice, little unit. Anyone out there have feedback on the use of this generator? It looks like a nice, quiet option for camping without hookups.

Thanks much,
Mike

Hmmmmmm, solar, or something that takes gas and makes CO and a little noise? I'd go with solar.

But they are nice little gens.

Let's see - sun doesn't always shine, panels are sensitive to placement, and don't generate all that much power. I guess the bigger question is how much current do you use?

For me, I use my Honda and love it. I have solar too, but haven't used it as much.

The Honda EU2000i has been the gold standard in power generation for rvers over the past six years. There is a reason why you will see more Honda 2000's out there than the other generators combined. They are quiet, relatively inexpensive, and extremely reliable. If your power needs are relatively minimal the Honda 1000 and Yamaha 1000 are worth considering. I ran a Honda 1000 for at least 2000 hours before I decided to replace it. I was able to get 7 hours of run time on a gallon of gas. Even with the high gas prices at 3 hours run time per day my electric generation cost were less than $60 per month. Unless you go out unplugged for 2 months or more a year you probably dont need solar and it functions mostly as a supplement to a generator unless you have an array of panels.

If the option is purely between solar and a generator to keep your battery charged, you have too much generator with a Honda 2000. A smaller Honda or Yamaha would be a better choice just for recharging the battery.

If the option is between solar or a generator that allows you the flexibility to step up your electrical draw and use some 110 volt appliances then the H2000 is a good choice. A H2000 is hit or miss in powering a air conditioner but from what I have read, you should count on a miss.

compared to solar, yes

We'll have to agree to disagree.
The Honda 2000i is rated for 1600 continuous, nice to borrow, glad I didn't pay for it!

Looks like you're new around here. Generator threads usually get nasty after the first page of useful information. Hang on.. oh.. and there is a Search feature.

The Honda 2000i is the standard by which all others are judged. Are they as quiet as . . ., etc.

The only real disadvantage is the cost.

We have a Honda 2000i we originally purchased when we had a HTT. We not only charged the batteries, but we also could run a microwave, small TV, etc. If your unit doesn't have these accessories, the 1000i might be more than adequate for most uses. As mentioned, A/C usage is a whole 'nother matter.

One advantage of the generator over solar is that you can pack it up and take it with you when you leave the campsite. Solar panels are expensive and can be an invitation to someone who's less than reputable to make them his own while you're gone. May not be as much of a problem if you stay in CG's, but if you're boondocking . . .

I had a honda 650 ex generator for years and years. You can find them for around 200.00 now. They are just a quite as the new hondas. it will run everything you need in a popup. I have the 2000 now for my travle trailer.
