Has anyone towed a fifth wheel on US-60 in Virginia between Buckingham and Lexington? It looks like it would be okay, but I'd like some info from someone who has driven the road.
We are towing a 36' Alpenlite Fiver with a Dodge One Ton Diesel pick up. DH is experienced (we've been FT for 3 years) and have traveled from Key West to Alaska, including the Top of the World Highway. That said--we've also learned to heed the advice of those with actual experience on the roads!
US 60 from Buckingham to Lexington will be all two lane highway but it goes through some beautiful country.
However, once you are past Amherst, you will start hitting the Blue Ridge Mountains. There are several mountains that the road crosses. Through this section there are tight curves and switchbacks. There is no truck lane or passing lane anywhere through here, nor a very wide shoulder in most cases. The road itself is standard width of about 24', with it somewhat wider in some of the tighter turns.
The mountains are not huge by any stretch, about 3000 - 4000 ft max. If you have no issues with this section, then you will pass through some very scenic territory in Virginia.
The worst of the trip will be climbing Long Mt. from Forks of Buffalo and decending to Buena Vista from the Blue Ridge Parkway. You shouldn't have any trouble but be aware that during weekdays there is a significant amount of truck traffic hauling chips to the paper mill in Covington.
