How many miles per gallon did the canoe get before it was mounted on the LTD? Just wondering....

okay... lemme ask it another way...

Putting a Johnboat on my mom's car IMPROVED our gas milage, because, I am assuming it DECREASED the wind resistance. MUCH LIKE the scoops that some put on top of their p/ups when towing their 5th wheels... or the top of semi tractors being sloped to break up the wind in front of the trailers.

Am I not explaining this concept very well?

I'm a believer, we haul our boat just to stream line things, and though I can't confirm a full mpg addition, it is slightly better. I make sure the boat doesn't extend beyond the windshield, or else the bow will catch air underneath it and spoil the air. The slope of the windshield follows the curve of the upside down hull. The boat extends about a foot over the back of the rear doors, and I can tell by the bug pattern on the front of the trailer that the air flow is indeed shooting over the top of the trailer. It acts like the wind deflectors on semi tractors. So I don't think it unreal to think it could benefit. I doubt a canoe would be big enough, but what the heck... I just love having a boat when ever we are camping on the water, and even in todays world with $5.00 diesel one mile per gallon doesn't really change the way I travel.

Happy camping everyone, Hans

In the summer I run with my 15 ft Grumman Sportboat on top of the roof of the truck in front of the fifth wheel trailer. It actually sticks out about 3' in front of the truck when attached. In the winter when heading south (snowbird) I do not take the boat. My mileage is checked religously whenever I travel with the fiver and the difference in mileage is negligable. The Grumman, with the 7-5hp motor, extra gear and gas tank etc. probably weighs around 200+ lbs and the extra weight uses up any savings that I might achieve by deflecting the air off the front of the trailer.

Better mileage only if you're sitting in it and rowing real, real fast!

I have to admit, I was hoping everyone would say "yes, a canoe WILL improve your gas mileage!" We have a canoe. We don't often take it with us, but I would be willing to strap it up top for a few more mpg's.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Sigh.

Jim is correct more weight and more drag...

it may change wind currents some but unless the inside of the boat was sealed off it would create turbulence offsetting any benefit...

just a thought if I put my pontoon boat on my roof there would be no frontal area of the RV to push air... HMM...

I will say... FINALLY I started getting some uselful responses. I was about ready to give up. I've posted stuff on verious forums in the past... toyota4runner.org, cloudynights.com (a telescope and astronomy forum), popuptimes.com etc... and this is the first time I've seen negative and smarty-pants responses to a newbie's question.
