Here is a good article with warnings and reminders about security when using open wifi signals. They say not to do email and IMing when on a free, public wifi.

My sensitive emails have been encrypted for years. My iChat's for the most part are encrypted, unless I'm speaking to someone who hasn't turned on encryption.

Those settings make it very easy for a hacker working from anywhere around the world to use computer codes to peek into your computer and steal sensitive information.

I don't think they have any idea how computer security works.

It's not so much the encryption of the contents, but also someone sniffing the network would be able to see your username and password to get in to your mail or whatever.

Most people use common passwords, so it's likely that the same password might get you into your ebay, other forums, maybe your work or bank... blah blah. It's information gathering that is the culprit, not so much your discussion privacy.

User names and passwords for secure sites are encrypted and therefore safe, even if someone is peeking.

And nothing is said about turning off File and Print Sharing, something that should be done as a matter of course when on public WiFi hotspots.
