Well, to say that I am thankful is an understatement....
My wife, 2.5 yr old son and two miniature long haired dachshunds were camping a couple weekends ago. There was noise out our door and my wife tells me it's a raccoon and to go move the recycling away so they don't bug us. So I open the door and all of a sudden there is a blur out across the front of the trailer and into the woods.
I was amazed on how fast those things will move. So I closed the door. My wife asked where the dogs were and I didn't notice either of them near my feet so I said they were still asleep I guess (they sleep on piles of dirty clothes at other end of trailer).
So a while later I wake up to a quiet bark. So I open the door and my larger of the two (more brave) comes in. Well, didn't I just about******myself. That blur was my wiener dog tearing after the raccoon.
So I check him over for bites, scratches, etc. Nothing. I'm really impressed he came back to the door as we were in a campground and there were lots of other trailers. He's up on all his shots, so that's good too (including the beaver fever etc).
I know that these little dogs were bred to hunt down weasel holes etc, which explains there interest in dark paces and why they like to burrow under the cloths, sheets etc. Also explains why they can be pretty ferocious towards same/smaller animals if they are cornered.
I'm actually rather proud of the little guy, although I have no intention of putting him in that position again. (the raccoon didn't return )

Yikes, that was scary! Someone told about a similar experience on this board a couple of years ago. Heard a noise outside, opened the door and unfortunately, a coyote grabbed the little dog that ran out. The dogs inside the RV probably smell or sense the outside critter and want to protect their territory and owners. We cannot be too careful in these situations. So glad your pup is okay.

Right on! Of course he hadn't a scratch on him; he's a smart dog: right?
Don't forget, little dogs are actually big dogs in a little package ; given that that big dog is stuffed into a little body, he's extra ferocious. Why else would they burrow after not just weasels, but badgers and wolverines: cute and fun as he may be, your dog is a bad a*s critter!
I wonder how your little feller would do with a dumb-ol' black bear?

You might well have dodged a bullet. Raccoons are capable of doing lots of damage to a dog--small dogs especially. We had a pair of them on our deck a few years back and one had our Cairn Terrier pinned face down and before we could get it to release the dog, she had been seriously bitten around the neck and clawed pretty good on the back. This particular Cairn has never been particularly aggressive with small animals or other dogs but that incident reinforced what I learned many years ago as a child at "Coon on a log" contests that were held back then--a coon is not to be messed with in their environment. I don't think a dachshund would be any problem at all for a full grown raccoon to kill.

Yes, agreed. The larger raccoons would have the strength and intelligence to take care of the little guy. However, I'm just glad that it either was a small one, or wasn't feeling it was worth the hassle.

I am glad to hear that your dog didn't get hurt. I also have two miniature dachshunds, one smooth coat and one long haired. They are a big part of our family.

We had a standard dachshund a few years back. He was a very protective dog. One day I was taking him out and there was a large Rott walking past the front of the house, he took off and attacked the Rott before I could even think about it. He got the Rott by the throat and won't let go. We had to give him away after my son was born because he was mean to him.
Now we have a bassett hound and he is the most gentle dog I have ever seen.
