I have to replace my rooftop AC unit on my 5vr. It was a 15k Coleman(ducted) and I'm looking for any advice on better units(Duo Therm? Carrier?) and what I might look for in a new one.

Why a "better" unit? The three brands, Coleman, Dometic, and Carrier are all good. You might look for a high efficiency unit...same cooling using less electricity.

All men over age 50 should get an annual PSA blood test. Mine had a low reading, but the yearly jump was significant. The biopsy showed cancer just entering the aggressive stage. Dr. Hackenslash removed it.

I've got a 15,000 btu rated Carrier that I believe to be substandard compared to Dometic and Coleman units I've had. In comparing the unit's output with others I'm guessing it's putting out a paltry 11,000 btu. Had it checked while under warranty and Carrier said that it was working up to capacity. I would vote not to get one of these!!

Although I feel for you, this is the kind of feedback I'm looking for. Experience not generalities. I am surprised as I thought Carrier was a "premium" brand.

I am not going to try to say which unit is better, but I will say that I repair more Colemans and replace more Duotherms????
The Coleman seems to have A better compressor but weaker compontents such as controll boards, thermostats, capacitors and fan motors. The Duotherm seems to have A weaker compressor but the other componentents seem to be better.
I havent had much dealings with the Carriers.
Hope this helps.

Something to look for is how the thermostat is wired- for a "standard" DuoTherm, the Coleman install doesn't use enough wires, so you would have to run new thermostat cables (the DuoTherm bi-metal setup would work without modification, though).
The Carrier ducted unit is typically sold with the remote thermostat, which I really dislike, as the temperature sensing is done in the air return, and isn't very accurate for heating.

On all of the brands, the vast majority of problems I run in to are installation problems.
If it were me, I would replace it with the same thing.

The Duotherms are very prone to air flow issues/icing. Especially if it's installed as a ducted system. The manufactuers don't seem to be able to get enough air flow. Each brand has it's own set of problems, but control/thermostat issues are a lot easier to deal with than a unit that can't be installed in a manner that will function properly regardless of what you do to it. If you have a unit that was installed incorrectly, it doesn't matter what you replace it with, you won't be happy with it. I have to agree with Chris about the installation issues. I have yet to see a marine installation from a builder that doesn't leave the factory without issues. I see more old Coleman units running than Duotherms.

I'd never buy anything from Dometic willingly..........I feel Dometic is a very unfriendly company to work with.......

I put in a Polar Cub on my TC. It's only 7000btuh, but I think they make bigger units. I got it because it had elec heat for it. I don't winter camp, but it does take the chill off when it's a little cool outside.

Just something to look into & evaluate.
