One note of caution for those intending to use the powdered form of Calgon or other: make sure you dissolve it in water before you dump it into your tanks! If you don't, it's likely to almost instantly become a nice flat white rock sitting immediately below your toilet (no remarks about cows and flat rocks, now). And like most rocks, it doesn't like to flow over to, well, anywhere, and it really doesn't like to move smoothly out through a valve that might be a tad smaller than it is when the rest of the tank is dumped. While it can be broken up, it isn't easy to do given the size of the hole you have to work through. It's EVER so much easier to dissolve the powder in water first. The voice of some experience speaking, here. Once, anyway.

I've found the key to holding tank cleanliness is lotsa water. What are we all going to do when water gets scarcer (as it may soon in Calif.) and dump station and RV park owners start having to ration/charge for water?

Gulp.

you call a tank rinser a "gadget"? I call it a wonderful convenience. can dump my black tank anytime I so desire. Don't really need to save up grey water to flush after the black tank. and I don't have to use Calgon, detergent, other "chemicals" and gadgets like that.

Well said Bumpy! I liked the Tornado so much I also installed one in my gray tank.

As for Calgon, after following the comments on this forum for a while, I decided on the Geo method, bought the Calgon and have never used it. Finally tossed it the other day after it sat in the MH for a couple of years.

I use whatever brand automatic dishwasher detergent is on sale. They have all the ingredients of the Geo method combined ( softener, detergent, bleach ) does a good job and septic safe too.

Could you please suggest a brand? I looked for Calgon for 20 min. @ Wallyworld & didn't find it or any H2O softener. I like the idea of all 3 in one package. I read the packages of several dishwasher products & didn't see softener in any of them( unless it's phosphate?). Also, how much should I use for a 40 gal. tank? Thanks for the info.!!!
