If you have an automatic garage door opener, turn it off.

Very poor advice. If anything happened while you are gone that damaged the vehicle, you would have to cover the loss yourself. Think fire, theft, vandalsim, storm.

We also disconnect the answering machine and turn the volume down to low on the telephone. If you have more than one you might unplug the extras.

Seems like every bit of that would be covered under the home owners policy, while it's parked in the garage.

When you shut off the water, what do you do about your yards? We have a nice yard with landscaping my wife has spent years on. I can't imagine letting it all dry up. I am always concerned about pipes breaking and flooding the house but our need for watering plants has over-ridden that.

OK, the bloomin' garage door opener is disconnected; it's unlikely our van will not get stolen from a locked garage.(Besides, we have great watchdog neighbors). The comprehensive is not cancelled in case the house drops on it. I believe our company allows us to cancel collision, liability and PIP (Personal Injury Protection), none of which are needed when it's not being driven for months at a time.
Cheers

The homeowners policy will not cover an automobile parked in the garage. At least comprehensive insurance must be maintined on the vehicle. However, check with your agent as some insurers will not allow a loss claim if only comprehensive insurance is mainatined on a vehicle.
