This has nothing to do with RV'ing, price of gas/diesel, newbie questions or anything like that. Yesterday while mowing my yard my six year old Toro 6.5 Personal Pace lawn mower gave up the ghost rather abrubptly. Blew the cyclinder right out of the darn thing. Still finding pieces in the yard. Never have seen that before. Started looking for a new mower today. I am leaning toward a John Deere JS 40 Self propelled. I have never had a JD before but a friend of mine has and loves it. I would like another opinion or two, and I'm sure I'll get it here. My other choice is another Toro, but the mower similiar to the one that blew up is $50 higher and doesn't do as much. By the way, a neighbor kid finished my yard for me.

I did have mower with Tecumseh engine few years ago and had experience similar to yours. The counterweight went loose and blew the shields off breaking few cooling fins on its way. Fortunately my son who was operating it at the time didn't get hurt. Now I have 2 Honda mowers and live happily, since even my wife can start those

Check and see what kind of motor the JD has....same as the Toro? If it's a Briggs and Stratton I would stay away from it. I had tons of trouble with my Toro's B & S. That was 18 years ago, though, before I got my LawnBoy 2 stroke.
I have had a Lawn Boy 2 stroke for the past 18 years. One problem...plastic gas tank cracked...replaced with a used $ 8 one....runs perfect.
The Lawn Boy 2 stroke, if you know 2 strokes is perhaps one of the best (best in my view and experience)lawnmower engines you can get....but you can't get them anymore new, as they stopped making them.
I have had a JD JS61 mower for about four years now. It has been a good mower, but you pay alot extra for that JD green and yellow. Parts are expensive as well. I do have a Briggs and Stratton engine, and it has ran well for me.
Bottom line. Good mower, but not better that any of the rest. When I need to buy again, I am going to look at Snapper. My neighbor has used the same Snapper mower for years.

I may be in the minority here but I have a Craftsman products with Briggs engines. I'll buy a Briggs or Techumse over a Honda or any other import any day. Also have a Craftsman Snow Blower. My lawn mower is going on it's eighth season and my snow blower its tenth. I change the oil twice per year in each and replace filters and plugs each season. Also, I drain all of the fuel before putting them in storage for the off season. Both of these are still going strong and I don't have any plans to replace them. When I need belts and blades and such they are no further away than Sears.

I have a Snapper that I bought 7-9 years ago with a Briggs engine. I have never changed the oil, changed the spark plug once and can't remember if I ever cleaned the air filter or not. It has never given me a seconds trouble.
My daughter gave me a Craftsman (I can't find the brand of engine on it anywhere) because they have a yard care service take care of their yard.
The Craftsman is newer than my Snapper and smokes when I first start it. I have started using it because it is self propelled and my Snapper isn't. I doubt that I will ever change the oil on this one either.

OMC (Evinrude and Johnson) used to make them.
Geez Skid we seem to have the same LawnMower.
Lawn Boy 2-stroke, the best mower money could buy.
My 1972 IH Cub Cadet, 7 hp Kohler, direct shaft-drive 3-speed, does fine cutting grass, but accells @ pushing snow. Doesn't get any better than a single-cylinder, Kohler, with horizontal-shaft drive.
Whatever type you decide to get, just make sure it has a nice shiatsu massage seat, refridgerated beer holder, programable GPS navagation, auto pilot, and A/C.
if it dosen't come with those most basic, necessary, fundamental, options, then forget the whole thing and hire a gardener....
