5er's are taller, more wind resistance. They are generally heavier because they are generally bigger. This means more fuel.

5ers are often more aerodynamic, sit differently behind a tow vehicle

TT's are often pull behind bricks that the wind can catch.

So I agree with Chris' answer: Depends.

All else I can say is personal experience is that I get the same fuel mileage pulling by 10K - 29ft 5er than I did pulling my old 20' travel trailer at 1/2 the weight over the same routes. TV is a 6.0l deisel.

My 33' 5er pulls easier than the 24' TT I had. My mpg seems to be the same.

Concerning the post's above in which MPG was the same or better when pulling a larger 5th wheel. Just wondering, is there any chance that you were pulling the smaller units at a greater speed, thus decreasing your MGP? Note: I am not trying to discredit the poster's in any way, I am just happy to hear the good news! LOL.

See you out there,

Robert

I pulled our 5er a little faster, because most of the time you don't know it's behind you they tow so well. Could it be: that you are carrying 1/3 of total weight on the back axle of the rv?

I have towed a lot of stuff over the years. Cargo trailers, covered utility trailers, fivers, cars on trailers, popups, etc.

The gas mileage is related to the effective frontal area. So, you can't say that any fiver will get better or worse mileage than any TT. One 28ft, 6000lb fiver of one make will have different aerodynamics than another of same size and weight from another mfg. Same for TT's.

For example, on flat level ground and no wind. Towing the 24ft fiver (6000lb) I get 10mpg. Towing a 6x12 covered cargo trailer (inside is 6ft high) I get 12mpg (even when it is empty-less than 1000lb). Both at 70mph.
