The only thing I found annoying about avast! was the "virus database has been updated" voice. It can be turned off in the settings. Right click on the spinning ball on the task bar. Go to program settings, click on the sounds icon and then check the box disable sounds.
Tough question. I went from running zone alarm to Avast earlier this year. It works for me. It is fairly unobtrusive, doesn't seem to suck down computer resources.
I upgraded to V8 on several computers with no problem. a "free" program found about a brazillion "potential" viruses, spywares, etc. and offered to remove them for a price. my Free program found one potential problem.

In my experience, uninstalling the previous anti-virus software, deleting it's residual files, running something like CCleaner, then re-booting, usually smooths the way to an easier install of new anti-virus SW...
