We're charter life members for almost 20 years. We use the ERS, members of a local chapter and attend Samborees(rallies) both in state and out of state. We enjoy meeting new people and the Samborees have not only fun for the whole family but gives you a chance to meet new friends.

I'd check to see if the campgrounds you plan on camping in offer Good Sam Discounts before you get a membership.

That would be the deciding factor for me.

There are dozens of different memberships to buy some costing thousands of dollars.

One we choose that has paid us our money back a few times over was the Passport America. That membership offers Half Price on membership campgrounds.

We waited till we were going to camp at one and called the 800 number to get our membership. While I was driving to the campground, the wife was on the phone where they gave us our membership number. That weekend alone we paid for the $45 membership cost in the money we saved.

You only get 10% off at campgrounds(CG) with GS and you have to BUY their CG directory. We had it for a couple years and never used it. Passport America costs more, $44/yr but you get 50% off and they send you a free directory. A lot of GS CG are PPA CG too so some people at the same place are getting half off while others are getting 10% off.

In two weekends we saved back our PPA membership fee and are in the black now for the rest of the year. However go to the PPA website and check out your camping areas. I've noticed some big gaps in coverage and you may camp in one of the low coverage areas. Florida is littered with PPA CG so we make out there.

Do the same with GS, if you can do so online.

I have never tried to use the discount and don't even know who accepts it. We joined the Good Sam "Club". We get a magazine, we go to state Samborees, and belong to a local GS chapter. GS has a good trip routing service on the web which is available to members.

Primarily we belong to it as a club and have made many friends through the events. Any other benefits are secondary.

so if in three years you camp at a good sam park 10 times and the cost averages $35.00 you get you money back.. I would thats a good deal. NOW when you do get it, log on an opt out of mailers you don't want or call and asked to be removed from mailing list. THEN go online and use the snot out of the other discounts like Disney tickets, online shopping etc.. You will get your monies worth EASILY.

PS; go check out a Maryland Samboree also, Bill puts on a good time for all ages!

We are also delighted with Passport America. Had Good Sam at start, but once got PA we never used GS enough to pay for dues.

As a lifetime member I enjoy the magazines and the discounts. The other informative mail doesn't bother us at all. It is a simple thing to toss any mail you don't want, whether it is from HD, Office depot, or whatever.

I dropped good sam since the AARP/AAA discounts are the same. it was just another pit to throw money into.
If you are looking for discount camping, check out the web site for passport america, it is the best $39 a year I have ever spent. one or two nights will pay you back your fee.
