Since its an 04 it must be a 6.0. I dont know what happens on a 6.0 when the turbo hose comes off but I sure can tell you what happens with a 7.3. You hear a big bang and a loud WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSh and then you have zero and I mean zero power. No smoke and you can only get up to 2000 RPM's. Been there done that twice.

Sounds like a mechanical issue to me.

Black smoke = too much fuel, or not enough air. Unlikely a fuel filter restriction from bad fuel. More likely a turbo/egr problem.

Could an injector sticking do this?

If an injector sticks open it will KNOCK really LOUD and will smoke gray.
Black smoke and low power is probably not enough air like a turbo problem or an air restriction.

Give the man a cigar. If it's not a clogged air filter, the turbo actuator got stuck for a few seconds.

Haven't had a chance to get to the dealer yet. The few times I've driven it since the trip, it's acted fine. I will update the thread once the dealer has had a chance to look at it.

Since it did it and then repaired itself it can only be one thing.
The vanes in the turbo hung closed and wouldn't allow the turbo to make full boost. A very common and known issue with 6.0 PSD.
Unless it has changed the Ford fix is a new turbo. Occasionally it can be repaired by replacing the actuator that drives the turbo charger vanes.
Do yourself another favor and google 6.0 PSD EGR block off plate.
This will save you from the other huge problem with this motor.
The EGR system is total junk and is subject clogging up and also the EGR cooler is a weak link. Blockiing the system off will solve both of these problems.
I hope you've got an extended warranty.

BTW, a clogged fuel filter will not cause excessive smoke only low power. Black smoke in a diesel is either not enough air or too much fuel. You don't think a clogged fuel filter will cause too much fuel do you?

Wolley has the answer. Ford now has a procedure to clean the turbo when this happens. It happened to me, and the cleaning cured the problem.

Unless you block the EGR..as posted above....your system will clog up again. Block the EGR and be done with it. Chevy Duramax has the same exact problem.
