have a 98 fleetwood wilderness fiver, took it out for first time and the hot water heater fires right up, but does not shut off? runs + runs. i'm assuming it's a bad t-stat, but i really dont know? anyone know how i should go about troubleshooting this issue?

Did you get hot water or wet steam? seems takes forever to get first tank hot 1/2hr. the tank relief valve is tempreture sensitive (200F ?). the t-stats clip onto the tank (some front some rear). watch for two wires going towards the tank. There are two t-stats 1-high limit, 1-operator.they are wired in series,if one fails the other should catch and shut the burner down. if you look close you will see writting showing the temp range (ie 130F). these t-stats must be firmly against tank or will read cool all the time. your owners book wiil show you wires and colors to help find. good luck.

Do you have hot water, the normal temp? Look and see if you have any water coming out of the relief valve pipe as that would indicate an overheating / temp sensor issue. If the hot water is of a normal temp look at the burner flame and see if it looks normal. If the water is normal temp the burner is probably not operating normally, the main jet could be partially blocked. If the water is exceptionally hot the relief valve should open and relieve pressure, it may not reseal after doing that and need replacement. Got any water leaks?

How long does it run? My 10-gallon takes about 40 minutes to heat to temperature.

actually i had a heating guy here about 2 hours ago on another matter. he is also a camper, so..... we got to talking and looked at it and the spring that holds the t-stat against the tank slipped off and it was just floating around, so i'm going to fix that and see what's what. it ran for over an hour, and water was VERY hot. fwiw. thanks for responding though
