The transmission front seal runs (seals) on what rotating surface, the input shaft, the torque converter, or ??? I'm going to pull my transmission to replace the sporadically leaking front seal. Thanks.

The Torque convert. With the engine off the tranny fluid will drain out of tge torque converter to the bottom part of the drive spline. you can drop the tranny then remove the torque converter and replace the seal and only lose about a cup of tranny fluid. I would recommend draining all of the tranny fluid and replace it and the filter if your going to drop the tranny anyway!

If it only happens occasionally, it could be a blocked breather----especially if it only happens when the transmission has been used hard. Cleaning and driving to see if that helps would be a lot easier then dropping the tranny.

Thanks Rob. I am trying to figure out why the seal started leaking. Only have about 15K miles on this remanufactured transmission. According to my transmission temperature guage, TC temp has never exceeded about 190 degrees. Also, how is the old seal removed?

Thanks Mark. Where is the breather, on top of the transmission? The transmission leakage is definately out of the bell housing port. If it was a breather problem, wouldn't the fluid blow out of the filler tube? I will crawl under it one MORE time and check.

Yes, the breather is on top and if it were a breather problem, it would be out of hose and not bell housing.

Jerry, You said you have 15K on a remanufactured tranny! Remanufactured is the key word!! Were new seals installed when it was rebuilt or were the old ones just inspected (and if they were okay, left alone)? Did the rebuilder install the torque converter with out damaging the seal? Not trying to be negative but I'm not too trusting of other folks work. Good news is if you are handy you can drop the tranny, remove the torque converter and replace the seal fairly easly. Just remember the weight!! Also, while you have the tranny down, check the fluid in the parking brake!
