My dealer had no clue as to what wire I was talking about, nor did they know where it should be hooked up or that there was even a second wire in place for a add on brake controller.. Needless to say, I don't go to the dealer for that type of thing anymore...

This is a quote from the owners manual for a 2008 Silverado. Page 4-86
"*The fuses for these two circuits are installed in the
underhood electrical center, but the wires are not
connected. They should be connected by your dealer or
a qualified service center. The fuse and wire for the
ITBC is factory installed and connected if the vehicle is
equipped with an ITBC. The fuse for the battery
feed is not required if your vehicle has an auxiliary
battery. If your vehicle does not have an auxiliary
battery, have your dealer or authorized service center
install the required fuse.
If you are charging a remote (non-vehicle) battery, press
the tow/haul mode button located at the end of the
shift lever. This will boost the vehicle system voltage and
properly charge the battery. If the trailer is too light for
tow/haul mode, you can turn on the headlamps as
a second way to boost the vehicle system and charge
the battery."
I do not understand why GM does not give information so the owner can do the wire connecting. As many of us have learned many dealers have no clue what to do and when they do it will probably cost a couple hundred to do a simple 5 minute job.
Note what was said about trailer battery charging. I did not know Tow Haul boosted alternator output voltage. This all assumes you have the trailer tow package. If your truck has the 7 way connector and a trailer hitch then you have the trailer tow package. The camper wiring a is a separate option.
I just went out to check out my 07 Silverado. Using a voltmeter I connected to ground (1) and everything was 0 volts except terminal no. 3 in the diagram (below). On terminal 3 I get 12.4 volts.
If the diagram is true that means my tail lights should be lit when the truck is parked but they're not.

Also you must engage the tow haul mode onthe trans for the alt to send enough power to charge a battery on a trailer( smart voltage regulator that they use in the new body styles)

Please note that the diagram is for the CAR end of the connector, that is, the end where the wires attach, NOT the end you plug your trailer into. If you are opening the cover and looking at the pins, the numbering sequence is reversed.

Scot wrote: Actually, on my 08 Chevy, I had to connect a wire that was wrapped up behind the fuse box under the hood. There are 2 posts on the front of the fuse box (again, under the hood) one is small and one is a little larger (don't remember placement) but this wire gets connected to the smaller of the 2. YOu will have to get (I think it was a 6mm) a nut from the local hardware store to use. I think this information was included in the manual. I also posted this information back in the late February time frame if you want to try and search for it, there was a link in that post that showed everything...
In attached the wire and installed a 40A fuse but I am not sure if I have power to my trailer yet. To test it I used my testing light. I attached the alligator clip to the ground pin and the light to the 12V pin but it didn't light. I am not testing correctly?
