Towed is a 2000 Suzuki Vitari, 2 liter, 4 wheel drive. Ac not working and I have two estimates for repairs. One made in Las Vegas a few weeks ago for $1600. to replace everything including condenser ( except compressor) for $1600. Today in Boise, Id just back from auto shop and they want to replace compressor only for $1500. Today they checked it out, found no refrigerant in system and recharged it. Said there were no leaks but did find some oil on compressor. It is blowing cold air now. Told me to drive it for a week or two and see what happens. They did put dye in the system. Where do I go from here? Any ideas?
Don't take it back to the first guy. What he told you doesn't make sense. If you lost all your refrigerant there must have been a leak. If so, air would have gotten into the system and contaminated the accumulator. Air is a contaminant to air condition systems. The oil he found could be from the refrigerant because freon contains oil. If it turns out there is a leak have them fix the leak and replace the accumulator and recharge the system. If the compressor is bad replace it and the accumulator. In case you aren't real familiar with the a/c system read this to brush up on your knowledge before you go back. A/C systems.

If you have oil on your compressor you compressor is leaking. I had a mechanic one time say my evap coil was leaking. I could not afford his price. I pulled it out and no oil. I recharged the system with it out evaporator coil out of its duct work. and it was leaking out of the compressor. That mechanic never even put pressure on it. The air will not hurt your system just the mechanic will put a new compressor and put it on a vacum prior to chargine. 1,500 still sounds high for a compressor and that is probably in near future. Will say you could get lucky and had a seal dry out and it has sealed back off but probaly will be short term. Not hard to change but recharging with todays regulations are a pain. The other issue is you may have Freon 12 and will need to change to 134A which can do when changing compressor but expansion valve will probably have to be changed due to pressure differences. I think on my 88 pu it the mechanic charged me 150 to change that and charge system after I put compressor in. Of coarse he then changed conections on system so my gauges would not work. I have a back ground in Residential AC
