"The driver managed to flee the burning vehicle and took a propane tank off the RV to prevent an explosion." Wonder how he did that?

Well Thank goodness he thought about getting the propane tanks off. That was quick thinking. And I guess I will not have the fridge run on propane just incase I have a tire problem.

Forget the propane, can driving on shredded tires generate enough heat to start a fire?

I'm not so sure anything would have happened if he had not removed those propane bottles. See the picture below of my former pop-up trailer after it burned in a barn fire. The propane bottles were full and you can see what remains of them if you look carefully. You can see the A frame, jack, and one propane bottle in the first picture. They did not blow up thank goodness.

I would assume the tire shredded as a result of a brake or wheel bearing problem that would have created a lot of initial heat that transferred to the tires.

Yes, especially for a dually. I saw a tractor trailer set a forest fire over a 1/2 mile swath of road. One of his rear tires blew out and started a fire throwing burning rubber as he kept driving.

A propane bottle will not explode in a fire; the pop-off valve will open and dump the fuel out in turn adding fuel to the fire but no explosion. We routinely lit a 500# propane tank when I was on the fire department for fire drills and never once did it blow up.
