Hi there. We are planning a summer trip down the CA coast. I know my older kids would get a kick out of seeing the Castle, but I also have a 1 year old. Has anyone ever done this with small kids? I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks

Haven't toured with kids in tow, but I do know there is lots of walking, stairs, etc., depending on which tour you take. Also lots of things that cannot/should not be touched. How does your little one do in a museum or similar places? Really a fascinating place.

We thought Hearst Castle was really interesting....but if I were 1 year old I probably wouldn't "get it", would be bored to death, and would probably cause all kinds of trouble...but that is just me being 1 year old.

Most tours are not stroller friendly. If you wear your little one than its doable but probably not the most enjoyable.

All 1 yr. old's are bored - no matter where they are unless on the floor and into trouble usually. We have twins and when they were little we went everywhere with them - even at naptime. Strollers work, but I'd call Hearst Castle and ask if they have elevators to accomodate you. At The Biltmore they did and there's lots of walking there too. Very interesting. All the untouchables shouldn't be a problem - just watch the baby. I would go into the china dept. at the big Dept. stores and our girls touched nothing. But then, I'm a big believer in a little paint stir stick - not that I really had to use it - I would just show it to them and they were great. Took naps in the stroller and all. If all else fails, buy a backpack and carry the baby - that way you know you're good to go. If you think, however that you will have no problems, think again - baby's need changing, etc. Have fun!

We did it with our small ones and they do NOT allow strollers. they do have baby back packs for rent. you will have to carry them. you should be ok though. your kid might not apreciate it though.

I visited Hearst Castle twice about 12 years ago. Kids were 5 and 9 at the time. I don't remember there being a lot of things lying around that kids like to grab. Mine did fine. There are four different tours of the house and grounds available.

Visited Hearst Castle last month, only way to take your one year old would be in a backpack. I don't think the tour is going to be particularly interesting to your other children, but if they want to go, then take the trip. Make sure you stop at the elephant seals viewpoint on Highway 1, about three miles north of the castle. All of you will find that scene to be enjoyable. Look for people that have blue jackets, they are sort of tour guides and will answer questions that you may have and point out things that you will otherwise miss. Hearst Castle was OK, but the seals were the highlight of our day out there on the coast. Several SP's in the general vicinity of this area that you may want to make camping reservations for.

Depending on when you're planning to be a the castle it could get very warm. Wear layers that are easily stored/carried. The beach is close but the castle is high on a hill and far enough inland that I've seen thick, wet, cold fog at the beach and T-shirt and shorts weather at the castle.

Thanks for the info. I thought about the backpack, but at 25 pounds, that might get a bit much. I didn't realize that they rented them, which is a good idea. We'll see....
