Hi all;

Because of previous family engagements, we cannot take an extended RV trip until July 8th or 9th. I would like to go to Alaska this year because it will never get less expensive then it is now, but am concerned about the late start. We would not have to return home to Tennessee until late September. An alternative this year would be a trip to Atlantic Canada this year and AK next year even though gas will certainly be higher. Appreciate any thoughts from experienced RV'ers who travel late in the season to the north country.

July is not too late to head for Alaska. I went in 2006 (6/1 thru 8/31)
I would certainly liked to have stayed longer.

I think I'm an experienced RV'er, but not in the North (only took 1-2 trips in AK in an RV)....

....that being said, I've spent a day or two in Alaska and IMNSHO, the most spectacular scenery in Alaska is in the month of September...and my own personal bent says that its great through the month of November.

Personal views aside, if you are in Alaska for the latter part of August and early September, I don't think it gets better for an RV'er. Crowds and bugs will be less, you'll see a few snow capped peaks, and there will be a pleasant coolness to the air in the mornings and evenings.

I'd go now (and again, !)

September is a nice month to travel up north. By October you have to have to start worrying about snow, but Sept still has nice weather (cool, but nice), less mosquitoes and less crowds...a great time to start making your way back home. (Plus the gas prices may even be a little cheaper since the summer driving season will be winding down.)

September is our favorite time in the North.
Visit the link in my sig for pics of our Sept 2007 visit.

Although, December is a nice time to drive through too ... no crowds! Pics of our two winter trips in a Class C are on the same site.

If you're going to stay much after Labor Day, you'd better be prepared to boondock, as most commercial (and even public) campsites close for the season. However, you get to enjoy all the benefits previously mentioned in this thread...and possibly even see the Alaska State Fair.

I live up here and that's a nice time of the year, if you're use to having dark nights then bring a lot of window coverings. its so bright we don't brother with flashlights. just so you know gas is cheaper up here (unless you're in a remote area)then in most of the what we call lower 48 which is the main body of the US. I would recommend going through Dawson city and over the top of the world highway. just west of Dawson (right after you get across the free fairy across the Yukon river) there's a huge government campsite (no hookups but has dumpster and free fire wood. also,in the town there's a rv park if you need.

We are not leaving until the 27th of July. This will be my 3rd drive up & think late August into mid Sept should be a great time in the north.

Thanks to all for the replies and the good info. We are really thinking seriously about doing the Canada to Alaska trip this year. My rig is ready to boondock and I'm getting excited to get started.
