Thanks Chuck
That happens more than most folk would believe. The city of Visalia here in California pushed its limits all the way out to SR 99 for the same reason. The town was about 7 miles or so from the highway when they moved the limit.
Both the CHP and the Visalia PD work this 99 & 198 junction area pretty hard.

In Georgia, the state has put some severe requirements on using speed detection devices because of some notorious speed traps in the past. First of all, you must be going more than 10 mph over the limit before an officer can use radar or lasers as evidence against you. There are limits on the distance from a speed change sign, steep grades, etc.
Didn't I just read that GA state troopers were stalling traffic I75N on purpose to catch the speeders? Seems to me, that shouldn't be too hard to do, knowing the average speed in GA is somewhere around ZOOM!!

mtlogger, I'm not sure what you mean by "stalling." You're right about the speeds. There are two: fast and stop. The "stop" is when you have a wreck or when someone else does and it balls up traffic.

A rolling roadblock started on Monday, for 90 days off and on. I remember when they did it in Savannah. Whatta mess that caused. The drunks just used US17 instead of I95. http://www.ajc.com/news/content/metro/st........r_0602.html?cxntlid=homepage_tab_newstab

OK, gotcha. Well, I just traveled I-75 in that exact area. The speed limit is 65 or 70 almost all the way from Atlanta, north to the state line. That includes Cartersville. The traffic is heavy and includes A LOT of trucks. If highway death are high, something should be done.

I am a fan of red light cameras. You only get a ticket when you enter the interesection after the light turns red. We've had numerous fatalities from red light runners. We have a locale that is considered a "speed trap"-Emporia, VA. The speed limit is well marked - if you obey the speed limit, it will not an issue.

Someone else from Georgia noted that the state recognizes that speed traps exist. I remember about 40 or so years ago when the governor posted a sign outside Ludowici saying that the town was a speed trap and should be avoided.

There have been several of those installed around Bakersfield. There was a bit of ruckus a while back when the company that owned them want a bigger slice of the pie from the fines. They threatened to remove the cameras if they didn't get it. It's all about the money.

I believe I referred to them as in the past. There are almost no speed traps now because of the limitations the state puts on the use of speed detection devices. That's not to say that an occasional over-zealous officer is not sitting in his favorite place waiting for any and all who care to pass his way.
But, yes, Ludowici was the worst. It had a nationwide reputation. It's my understanding that 70% of the city's revenue came from traffic fines and over 99% of those fines were from out of the county. One of the laws that Georgia enacted after "closing Ludowici down" governed the percentage of a city or county's revenue that could be derived from traffic fines. I don't know the percentage but it sure is less than 70 percent.
