Since the mountains are still packed with snow I decided to spend some time in the desert.
On the way to Sheep Creek Canyon near Grasmere.

Not a built 4X4 with a pop up but still does pretty darn good.

Arrived at Sheep Creek Camp.

It is very secluded and quiet. Fishing was poor due to fast muddy waters from all the rain.
This is Bruneau Canyon near Bruneau.

I spent the last night here at the brim of Bruneau Canyon.

It poured rain all night. I woke the next morning to find I was in 4" of greasy mud. Even with 4X4 I had a very difficult time getting back to the gravel road. If I had not made it on my last attempt I was going to have to chain up. YUCK. Glad I made it.
All in all it was a very relaxing trip with interesting scenery. You drive along and can see from horizon to horizon swearing there could be no canyons around and then you drop into one. I guess there are many more canyons in this area although I only visited the two.

Thanks for sharing the trip, DJ. Looks like perfect "camper country". I have had that area on my radar and your report just moved it up the priority list by several notches.

My old stomping grounds, before we moved west of the Cascades. I sure miss the horizon-horizon views. The canyonlands are spectacular in spring. Also try the Jacks Creek area, especially if you have quads. Lots of desert big horns and mule deer.

Ah..the Owyhee Desert. I'm getting prepped for a 4 day trip out to the desert next Friday. Of course the TC will stay home and I will be driving the Jeep and living in a wall tent. Friends and I usually do a spring trip and a fall trip each year. It is one of the most beautiful places I can imagine...and virtually no people. We have driven around out there for days without seeing another soul. But anyone planning a trip to the Owyhee's needs to make sure that they are well prepared; you can find yourself in trouble out there very quickly. We always travel with 3 Jeeps with lockers, winches, lots of spare parts and plenty of spare cable. Sometimes it's a long way to a winch point. Thanks for posting the pics, they have me even more excited than I was already.

Great images! I spent time there two years ago with my old coamper. Camped on top of a hill overlooking a creek and the Air Force practice area. Sat out in the sun and watched the F-whatevers and flares going off. I even showered outside as there was not a soul in sight. I don't have 4x4 so I didn't venture down the steep hills. And as mentioned earlier winching would be a issue also...so I just enjoyed it from on high. Isn't that canyon marvelous!! It just drops away and you can't see it until you are on it. Spent a night at the nice state park where the dunes are..nice place. Thx for brining back the memory and if you can get there do it. Capt PJ

DJ,
Very nice. My daughter lives in Idaho and I had never seen (or heard of) Owyhee Canyons. Gotta get around more next time out. Thanks for the report.
