My Norton just expired and I down loaded Norton and PC spyware from Google. I ran the PC Spyware and it found several threats. Can you experts recommend a system that works good. I just begin using a AT&T air card for our service, could not get WIFI at several places. We have two laptops with us and the Dell got the blue screen of death after I installed the Air Card and I cannot even get to the safe mode to boot up. It just shuts off before the F8 key will take effect. I will take to repair shop when we get near one for a couple of days. This is the week for electronic problems Direct TV system also went out.

Thanks for your help

I have had a service named STOP SIGN for a number of years. They are great. Provide a firewall, pop-up blocker, virus removal, etc.,

They do business as "e acceleration".... not being computer-wise, I am really dependent upon them.

I"m not a fan of Norton or McAffee.. epically McAffee, but that's another story or two.

I use AVG-Free from Girsoft, Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware and a thing called CCleaner which is basically a cookie tosser. but can do some other fun stuff too.

Of all the registery cleaners I've tried (3) it worked and did NO damage... The other two did damage.

As far as a Anti Virus, note: I'm not an expert, goes I use Eset NOD32 AV. I've been very happy with it for two years.

I would strongly recommend that you are sure all of Norton is uninstalled/removed before attempting to install another brand of AV. Do a search on google for Norton removal issues and solutions.

PS: With the luck you have been having, stay away from my electronics... lol

Spybot and Adaware are similar in what they do and both are excellent, IMHO. Still, it helps to know just what they are doing so a reading of the help files is in order if you have never used these tools before. I use JV16 Power Tools (Payware) for the registry. Never had a mishap...yet.

While cruising real estate sites at work a short while ago, my computer contracted a virus. Spybot, AdAware and CCleaner didn't detect and so couldn't quarantine it. After some extensive Googling, I learned about Spyware Detector and it's partner MaxRegistry Cleaner. For a $40 investment, these two programs did a great job. I'm relieved to say my office computer has been well ever since.

My home ISP runs a robust security system, but even so, I decided to install these two at home. After their first run through my system, I was amazed at the number of critical and high "threats" they found that Spybot and AdAware did not.

Sue , Spybot , AdAware and CCleaner are not antivirus , you should have used AVG or something similar antivirus program to prevent the infection to begin with.

My computer guy recommends AVAST which is a free anti-virus program.

There really is no one best way to stop the problems. I've taken a multi-prong approach to it though.

1) I've only use Firefox with the NoScript extension when I surf, those two things deal with most of the bad websites out there. Then I add on CS Lite and AdBlock. The only time I use IE anymore is to update Windows.
2) I use AVG for anti-virus, and that's all I've loaded. In the past I've checked using AdAware and Panda's Online scan and been clean, so I really don't bother checking much anymore.

Doing that I've had no problems. I have my family run the same way, and no issues either. Even though I switched to a Mac I still run Firefox and NoScript.

I would suggest AVG free. and some of those "trial" programs will diagnose and find about 100 different "potential" problems, hoping to sell the program.
