We were recently given a 1986 Coachmen Classic Motor Home, Class A for our Mission trips and Youth Group events. We haven't picked it up yet and have a trip to Mexico to make in a month and another to Florida shortly after that. I am trying to research the MPG on the thing, I am figuring about 10per gal, but wondering how many gals a gas tank on it would be. Does anyone know? Owning an RV is new to us, so as far as info...........we are "green".
Thanks,
Bunnie

If it has the Ford 460 or Chevy 454 engine you won't be getting 10mpg.
Figure on between 6 and 7!
Tank size? - I have no idea. Do you have any kind of a manual?

Thank you for your quick responses/answers. I WAS hoping to get at least the 10 mpg, but........
No, we don't have a manual, I am sure the family who is donating it to us will give us one if they have one.
I am not sure about the engine/motor type. Here is what I do know, for now:
1986 COACHMEN Classic, 22'long, Thorley headers, Onan 4K GenSet, under 15K mi. on motor, newer refrigerator, electrical, water heater.

Thanks again!
Bunnie

PS WHat's a "thorley Header"? lol

I had a 86 23' Coachmen C with a Chevy 350 and 4:10 gears. Best I ever got was 11.1 down side was 5.4. Low end was in the Rockies and I must have had a tail wind on the other. I used to figure on 8 as an average for a big trip.

Thanks for the info! Can you tell me how big the gas tank is/was on yours. Sounds like it is the same as the one we just received. You're right, it is 23' long, not 22'. I am trying to figure up how much in gas $ I am going to need for a trip to Mexico (round trip from Ohio to Mexico is 3,400 miles). I am thinking that if I know, roughly, how many gallons per fill-up I can figure out, roughly, what the trip will cost in gas alone. WOOO HOO at $4.something a gallon!
I have another dumb question............Do these things have 1 or 2 gas tanks and if there are 2 how any gallons per tank?
Thanks again,
Bunnie

3400 miles divided by 8 miles per gallon = 425 gallons x $4.00 = $1700.

I had a 24' with a 50 gallon tank. The number of gallons per fillup doesn't change the cost at all, just how often your stop for fuel. I'd use 6 mpg for your estimates. That would mean around $2200 for gas for 3400 miles.

Thorley Headers are after-market exhaust manifolds for the engine. They generally improve low-end torque & mileage slightly.

Contact Coachman directly-they may have a manual still. If not, they should still know the specs on the unit.
